Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Wind Garden is a garden in the Furano area of Hokkaido that was designed and maintained as a filming location for the TV drama "Wind Garden," which aired in 2008, and remains a tourist spot that has remained open to the public since the show aired. Built on the slope of a hill with the Tokachi mountain range in the background, the garden blends a Western-style garden atmosphere with seasonal flowers such as lavender, allowing visitors to enjoy different looks throughout the seasons. The garden is equipped with walking paths, benches, and a building (garden house) that retains the atmosphere used in the drama, allowing visitors to relax in nature.

Highlights

  • Seasonal flowers: You can enjoy different scenery depending on the season you visit, such as flower beds in spring, lavender and colorful perennials in summer, and autumn leaves and fruits.
  • Garden House and Photo Spot: The garden space and Western-style building used in the drama are popular photo spots.
  • Views and natural scenery: The garden offers a tranquil and relaxing view of the Tokachi mountain range and the rural landscape of Furano.
  • Walking path: Take a leisurely stroll along the well-maintained path and relax while enjoying the flowers, scents, and breeze.
  • Seasonal Events: Guided tours, related events, and special sales may be held during the flowering season and special periods (check official information for details).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Location: Furano, Hokkaido (Please check the official website for detailed address and parking information)
  • Nearest station: Furano Station on the JR Furano Line is the nearest major station (it is convenient to use a car or taxi from the station).
  • Access by car: It is generally about 15 to 30 minutes from the center of Furano city. Access is via prefectural and national roads. Parking is often available on-site or nearby, but as the number of spaces is limited, please follow the directions for using the temporary parking lots in the area when it is crowded.
  • Public transportation: Tourist buses and local buses in the Furano area may operate depending on the season. Operation times and routes change depending on the season, so please check the operation information before visiting. If you take a taxi, it will take approximately 15 minutes from Furano Station.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short walk: 30 minutes to 1 hour (to quickly see the main attractions)
  • Relaxed viewing and photography: 1-2 hours (if you want to take your time looking at the flowers and buildings and taking photos)
  • Combine with sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (when combining with nearby farms, cafes, and tourist spots)

Nearby spots

  • Lavender farms in Furano and Nakafurano (Farm Tomita, etc.): A popular tourist destination during the summer lavender season.
  • Furano Cheese Factory and Winery: Enjoy a food experience and tastings unique to Hokkaido.
  • Ningle Terrace (Furano): A small shopping street-style spot where you can enjoy strolling around looking at woodwork and handmade goods.
  • Biei Patchwork Road: This driving course is easily accessible by car and allows you to enjoy the hilly scenery.
  • Viewing spots and hot springs of the Tokachi mountain range: We also recommend relaxing in the hot springs and enjoying the mountain scenery.

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park gets very busy during the summer lavender season, long holidays, and weekends. Parking lots can fill up, so we recommend arriving early or using public transportation.
  • Weather and clothing: The weather in the foothills of Hokkaido can change quickly and it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings. It's a good idea to bring a jacket, especially from spring to autumn. Bring rain gear and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Plant protection and etiquette: Please do not touch or pick flowers or plants. Please follow the rules of the park (such as restricted areas) and be considerate to other visitors.
  • Photography: Photography is generally permitted, but there may be restrictions on the use of drones or for commercial purposes. We recommend checking in advance.
  • Insects: In the summer, there may be insects (mosquitoes, bees, etc.). Please be aware of insect repellent and allergies.
  • Winter hours: The park may be closed or only partially open during the winter. Please check the official website or the latest facility information before visiting.

Before visiting, it's a good idea to check the official website or tourist information for the latest information (opening hours, admission fees, event information, parking information, etc.). Wind Garden is a relaxing spot where you can leisurely enjoy Furano's nature and seasonal flowers, so be sure to allow plenty of time for your visit.
