Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Aoi Aso Shrine is a historic shrine located in the center of Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. It has long been revered as the local guardian deity and is said to have had close ties with the Sagara clan, a powerful local clan. The shrine building stands out for its beautiful wooden architecture, and retains the charm of traditional temple and shrine architecture, including intricate carvings and roof designs. Located close to the center of town, it is a spot well worth visiting along with the historical scenery of the Kuma River and Hitoyoshi.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Worship Manners: When praying, it is common to purify yourself with the water basin, bow twice, clap twice, and bow once. If there are areas inside the shrine or with ritual implements where photography is prohibited, please follow the instructions.
- Crowds: It can get crowded during festivals and tourist seasons (cherry blossom viewing in spring, autumn foliage viewing in autumn, and local festivals). If you want to enjoy a quieter experience, we recommend visiting on weekday mornings.
- Floors and steps: There are stone pavements and steps within the temple grounds, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Please be careful as the grounds can be slippery in rainy weather.
- Weather and Transportation: The Kuma River basin is prone to heavy rain and typhoons, which can cause flooding and road closures. In the event of heavy rain, please check public transportation and local information in advance.
- Shrine office and gift shop hours: The reception hours for shrine offices and gift shops may be limited (for example, generally from morning to evening). If you would like to receive a goshuin (stamp) or omamori (charm), please arrive with plenty of time.
Location (approximate): Kamiaoaicho, Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture (please check the latest location and opening/closing information before visiting).
If necessary, we recommend checking the festival dates and special public opening information (special viewings, restoration work, etc.) in advance at official or local tourist information centers.
