Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Bannashi-ji Temple is an ancient temple in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, known for its ties to the Ashikaga clan (a different branch from the Ashikaga clan that founded the Muromachi shogunate). In the Middle Ages, it served as the Ashikaga clan's residence, and as a result, castle-like structures such as earthworks and moats remain within the temple grounds. The temple buildings (main hall, bell tower, mountain gate, etc.) are filled with a strong historical atmosphere, and the scenery changes with the seasons (cherry blossoms, fresh greenery in early summer, autumn leaves). Despite being located in the city, it has a calm atmosphere and is a great spot for historical strolls and photography.
