Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kanazawa Bunko is the collective name for a historical museum and library located in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It originated as a private school and library established by Hojo Sanetoki, a member of the Hojo clan, during the Kamakura period (late 13th century). Since the Middle Ages, it has been revered as a center of scholarship and culture, and many ancient documents, manuscripts, and picture scrolls have been passed down through the ages. Today, as a facility known as the Kanagawa Prefectural Kanazawa Bunko, it preserves, exhibits, and researches classical books and historical documents, and its greatest appeal is that visitors can come into contact with these precious historical documents, which are open to the public.

Highlights

  • Collection: A large number of Japanese and Chinese classics, sutras, picture scrolls, ancient documents, etc. These include historical materials of national treasure and important cultural property level, and you can see primary sources that convey political, cultural, and religious affairs from the Kamakura period onwards (exhibits are changed regularly).
  • Permanent and special exhibitions: Special exhibitions and themed exhibitions are held, and they provide easy-to-understand explanations of the historical background and the key points of the documents. There may also be exhibition commentaries and guided tours.
  • Buildings and Gardens: Historic buildings and a tranquil garden space. Strolling around the surrounding ancient temples and historic sites will give you a real feel for the cultural background of the time.
