Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kinsakubaru Primeval Forest is a primeval forest representative of the subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests remaining on Amami Oshima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture. Due to the island's unique climate and long geographical isolation, many endemic and rare species live and thrive, making it a notable site for its high biodiversity. The forest boasts a thick evergreen canopy, ferns, epiphytes, and a humid atmosphere unique to the subtropics, making it an attractive place for nature observation, bird watching, and photography.

Historically, this area was difficult for humans to access, and logging and development were restricted to preserve it. Currently, there are walking trails and observation points for nature observation, and guided tours for tourists are also available.

Highlights

  • Observation deck and promenade: Walk through the forest and observe the depth of the trees and the diverse plant life up close. You can get a real sense of the scale of the forest from the views from the boardwalk and observation deck.
  • Observation of endemic and rare species: Enjoy spotting endemic species such as the Amami rabbit (rarely seen as it is nocturnal), the Amami woodcock, and insects and plants endemic to Amami (please be sure to follow the observation rules).
  • The changing faces of the seasonsEach season has its own charm, such as the fresh greenery, the flowering season, and the beauty of the moss and ferns after the rain. The forest is especially beautiful in the rainy season and on cloudy days, making it perfect for photos.
  • Nature sounds and silence: Because there are few artificial sounds, you can experience being surrounded by the sounds of nature, such as birdsong and the rustling of leaves. The silence that you cannot experience in the city is what makes it so appealing.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • There is no railway, so the main ways to get there are by plane, ferry, car (rental car), or tourist bus.
  • Air: Use Amami Airport (Amami Oshima). It is common to travel by car from the airport.
  • Ports and Ferries: If you arrive on the island by ferry or high-speed boat from Naze (Amami City), you can take a car or tour from Naze Port.
  • Local transportation: Renting a car is the most convenient option. You can also use a sightseeing bus or a guided tour to avoid having to drive. Some villages and roads are narrow, so if you are unsure about driving, we recommend joining a tour.
  • Please register your destination ("Kinsakubaru Primeval Forest") in a map app in advance and check the arrival route and whether parking is available. Parking may be limited during peak tourist season.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term observation: If you focus on the observation deck and promenade, it will take about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Take your time to observe: If you plan to walk while observing plants, wild birds, and taking photos, it is safe to plan on spending about 1.5 to 3 hours (half a day).
  • Join a guided tour: It depends on the tour, but it usually lasts between 2 and 4 hours.

Nearby spots

  • Amami Park (near Amami Airport) — A facility where you can learn about Amami's nature and culture, it's a convenient place to stop by after arriving at the airport.
  • Naze City (Shopping and Local Cuisine) — This is the city center where you can find Amami's local cuisine and souvenir shops.
  • Ohama Beach — Enjoy swimming and sunsets at this white sand beach near the airport.
  • Other natural spots — The island is dotted with beaches, mangroves, and other forest trails. If you have time, it's worth exploring these places.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Conservation and Manners: In order to protect the natural environment, collecting plants, feeding animals, and littering are strictly prohibited in the virgin forest. Please be mindful to stay on the trails and refrain from making excessive noise.
  • Guide availability: Guided tours are recommended or required in some areas. For deeper visits or more in-depth commentary, please book a tour in advance.
  • Clothing and equipment: Please be sure to bring non-slip shoes (trekking shoes, etc.), long sleeves and long pants (to protect against mosquitoes and branches), rain gear, and drinking water. The forest can easily become muddy after rain.
  • Climate and Seasons: During the rainy season and typhoon season (generally June to October), there is a possibility of bad weather and road closures. Travel itself can be particularly difficult during typhoon season, so be sure to check the weather and traffic information in advance.
  • Wildlife and insect protection: There are times when mosquitoes, black flies, and wasps may appear. Please bring insect repellent and, if necessary, arm covers (please be careful if you have any allergies to medicines).
  • Crowding situation: It can get crowded during peak tourist seasons and on weekends. If you want a quieter viewing experience, early morning or late morning on a weekday is usually the quieter option.
  • Information confirmation: The conditions of trailheads and walking trails, availability of guides, and parking information may change. Be sure to check the latest information in advance with Amami tourist information centers, accommodations, and official information.
