Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Sukayu Onsen is a historic hot spring resort at the foot of Mount Hakkoda in Aomori City, characterized by its highly acidic spring waters and distinctive sulfurous smell. It has long been popular among the common people as a hot spring that is effective against skin diseases and rheumatism. In particular, the large bath, known as the "Cypress Sennin Bath," is a large wooden bath made from cypress wood, and is a tourist attraction as it is wide enough to accommodate many people at once. Surrounded by beech and coniferous forests, the scenery changes with the seasons (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, frost-covered trees, and snowscapes). Accommodation is also available, making it a popular tourist destination where you can enjoy the hot springs and local cuisine.
Highlights
- Hiba Senninburo: A huge wooden bathtub. The scent of wood and the sense of openness are appealing (there are mixed bathing times, so please check the bathing rules in advance).
- Acidic spring quality: Acidic springs have a tingling sensation on the skin. Hot spring analysis charts are often displayed, allowing you to experience the benefits of the water for yourself.
– Building and interior atmosphere: The architecture and lobby are reminiscent of a well-established inn with a sophisticated design, with the atmosphere of a hot spring resort.
- Surrounding nature: seasonal natural scenery such as the Hakkoda trekking courses and winter frost-covered trees (snow monsters).
- Photo Tip: During the snowy season, the contrast between the silvery white scenery and the wooden buildings is beautiful (however, photography is prohibited inside the building and in the changing rooms).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Aomori Station is the most common starting point. Head towards Hakkoda from central Aomori City.
- By car: Approximately 30-60 minutes from central Aomori City via national and prefectural roads (depending on road and traffic conditions). In winter, snowfall and road icy conditions are severe, so winter tires (studless tires) and chains are essential.
- Bus: There are local bus routes (towards Sukayu Onsen and Hakkoda) from Aomori Station, but please note that the number of buses is limited and the timetable changes depending on the season and day of the week, so please check in advance. Some bus routes are suspended or changed during the winter.
- Taxi: If you are short on time or there are no trains running, it is convenient to take a taxi from Aomori Station (takes about 40-60 minutes, fare depends on the distance).
*Please check the official website of each bus company or accommodation in advance for detailed timetables and operating status.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: It gets especially crowded during the autumn foliage season, the winter ski season, and long weekends. There may be a wait for day-use baths, so make sure you allow plenty of time.
- Bathing etiquette: Please observe general hot spring etiquette, such as washing your body thoroughly with soap before bathing, not bringing towels or clothing into the bathtub, tying up your hair, and bathing quietly.
- Mixed bathing and women-only hours: Senninburo has mixed baths, so there may be rules regarding bathing hours and bathing. Please check the latest rules at the reception, such as women-only hours and how towels are handled.
- Tattoos: Each facility has different policies regarding tattoos. If you have a tattoo, check with the receptionist and, if necessary, bring a bandage to cover it, or consider enquiring about a private bath or overnight stay.
- Irritation from the water: The water is highly acidic and may cause irritation to those with cuts or sensitive skin, or those wearing metal jewelry. Avoid bathing for long periods of time, and consult a doctor if you have any concerns about your health.
- Winter precautions: Hakkoda is a heavy snow area, and roads may be temporarily closed or require chains. Wear non-slip shoes and wear warm clothing. The operating status of local buses and tourist facilities is subject to change, so be sure to check in advance.
- Photography: Photography is prohibited in many areas of the building and in changing rooms. Please be considerate of the privacy of those around you when taking photographs.
