Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Dotonbori is a bustling shopping district along the Dotonbori River that flows through Osaka's Chuo Ward, and is one of Osaka's most famous tourist destinations. It originated as a waterway dug by Yasui Doton in the early 17th century (around 1612), and since the Edo period it has developed into an entertainment district with theaters, comedy halls, and restaurants. Today, neon signs, giant 3D advertisements (such as the Glico sign and crab signs), and the bustling riverside scenery are lit up at night, attracting tourists from both Japan and abroad as a gourmet town. A major attraction is the opportunity to experience the unique Osaka atmosphere, where food culture (takoyaki, kushikatsu, fugu, crab, and other flour-based dishes) is fused with entertainment.

- Ebisubashi Bridge and the Glico Sign — The bridge over the Dotonbori River is a popular photo spot, with many tourists taking commemorative photos with the illuminated Glico neon sign in the background.
- Kani Douraku's giant crab sign — The giant moving crab sign is one of the iconic symbols of Dotonbori.
- Food Tour There are a variety of food stalls and restaurants lined up, focusing on "flour-based" foods such as takoyaki, kushikatsu, okonomiyaki, and fried foods.
- Dotonbori River Cruise — Boat tours are available day or night to view the surrounding neon signs and bridges from the river (operating times vary seasonally).
- Hozenji Yokocho and Hozenji Temple — A charming alleyway with a restaurant and small temple. A spot with a great atmosphere, lined with stone pavements and lanterns.
- Signs around Ebisubashi Bridge in Dotonbori — Classic doll signs and unique advertisements line the street, and the neon lights sparkle at night.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: Namba Station, which is served by the Nankai, Kintetsu, Hanshin, and Osaka Metro lines, is just a few minutes' walk away. The center of Dotonbori is about a 3-8 minute walk away.
- Other: It is within walking distance of Osaka Metro Shinsaibashi Station (approximately 8-12 minutes) and also within walking distance of Nihonbashi Station.
- From Kansai Airport: Take the Nankai Electric Railway to Namba Station, or transfer to the JR and subway lines. The journey time will vary depending on the transfer, but it will generally take about 40 to 60 minutes.
- By car: As it is in the city center, there are parking lots available, but it is often crowded and congested, so it is more convenient to use public transportation.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion: The roads are extremely crowded on weekends, public holidays, Golden Week, summer vacation, and the New Year holidays. When taking photos or standing still, please choose a place where you will not cause a nuisance to other pedestrians and do not block the flow of traffic.
- Walking etiquette: Please observe basic etiquette, such as not obstructing passage by walking while using your smartphone or carrying large luggage, and waiting in line in order.
- Waiting time for food and drink: Popular restaurants often have long lines. They are especially crowded during peak hours (around 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM). Please consider making a reservation in advance or arriving early.
- Garbage and sorting: Outdoor trash cans are often limited. Please be considerate and take your trash home with you or use the trash cans at restaurants.
- Waterside Safety: Although there are fences along the river, children and drunk people should be careful not to fall.
- Seasonal measures: In the summer, it can get very humid, so be sure to stay hydrated and wear sunshades. In the winter, it can get quite cold, so be sure to dress warmly. Be careful when it rains, as the roads can get slippery.
- Considerations for filming: When taking photos in front of a store or when other people are in the photo, please be considerate of the privacy of the people in the photo. Commercial photography may require prior permission.
