Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Tsujunkyo Bridge is a stone aqueduct bridge (stone arch bridge) located in Yamato Town, Kamimashiki District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Completed at the end of the Edo period, it was built as a civil engineering facility to transport irrigation water from upstream across the valley to the fields downstream. Its ingenious structure, with its stone arch structure and the waterway running through it, is highly regarded both technically and culturally, and is preserved as a local historic building.
Its greatest attractions are its magnificent stone arch and the "water discharge" (the spectacle of large amounts of water being forcefully released from the side of the bridge) that takes place during certain seasons and tourist events. The scenery, which blends in with the surrounding mountains and rice terraces, is photogenic and changes with the seasons, from the fresh greenery and cherry blossoms of spring to the autumn leaves and snowy landscapes of winter. Another highlight is that it has been restored and preserved and is still in use after being damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.
