Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Omihachiman is a castle town and merchant town located on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa in central Shiga Prefecture. Since the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods, it has prospered as the base of Omi merchants, and the old townscape and Horikawa (Hachimanbori) river still retain strong traces of that time. It is a tourist destination with a perfect blend of history, culture, and food, including the town's landmark Himure Hachiman Shrine, the remains of Hachimanyama Castle, numerous Vories buildings (Western-style architecture), and the recently popular La Collina Omihachiman (home of Taneya/Club Harie).

Highlights

  • Hachimanbori and boat tours — The scenery is reminiscent of old waterways and white-walled townscapes. You can feel the atmosphere of the past as you leisurely tour around on a Japanese boat. The atmosphere is especially nice in the morning mist.
  • Himure Hachiman Shrine — A historic shrine in the center of the city. Festivals and seasonal events are also worth seeing.
  • Yawatayama Ropeway and Castle Ruins — Take the ropeway to the top of the mountain, where you can see the town and Lake Biwa in its entirety. There are also remains of the castle and stone walls.
  • La Collina Omihachiman — A theme park-like facility for a famous Japanese and Western confectionery shop. It has shops, cafes, a large rooftop garden, and serves the famous Baumkuchen (although it's so popular, there can be long lines).
  • Omi merchant townscape and old houses — Houses and merchant houses associated with Omi merchants, such as the former Tomo family residence, are scattered around the area. You can also see Vories architecture (modern architecture).
  • Local History Museum and Art Museum — There are several facilities where you can learn about the history and culture of the region (with special exhibitions held each season).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • train
    • The most convenient way to get there is to get off at Omihachiman Station on the JR Biwako Line (Tokaido Main Line). It is easily accessible from Kyoto and Osaka.
    • You can also use the Omi Railway Yokaichi Line (transfers may be required depending on the line).
  • Travel from the station to sightseeing spots
    • To get to Hachimanbori and Himure Hachimangu Shrine, it is a 20-30 minute walk from JR Omihachiman Station, or about 10 minutes by city loop bus or taxi.
    • La Collina Omihachiman is a 10-15 minute drive from the station (it's a bit far to walk, so we recommend taking a bus or taxi). Parking is available on-site.
  • car — Accessible from the Meishin Expressway (Ryuo IC, Hikone IC, etc.). The city is a tourist destination with many alleys and one-way streets, so be careful when driving.
  • From the airport — Accessible by train from Kansai International Airport and Chubu Centrair International Airport (transfer required).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Half-day course: A quick tour of the main sights: 2-3 hours (walk around Hachimanbori and Himure Hachimangu Shrine).
  • "Full-Day Trip" including the main sights and La Collina: 4-6 hours.
  • "Trips of one night or more" where you can leisurely stroll around eating and visit nearby places (Hikone, Azuchi, etc.): Two days or more, one night is recommended.

Nearby spots

  • Hikone Castle (approximately 30-40 minutes by car or train) — A national treasure castle and castle town.
  • Azuchi Castle Ruins (Azuchi) — A historic site associated with Oda Nobunaga (accessible by car).
  • Lake Biwa (lakeside area) — Great for cycling and strolling along the lakeside.
  • Sawayama (a small hill near Hikone) and surrounding temples and shrines - historical walking spots.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion — It tends to get crowded on weekends, national holidays, Golden Week, summer vacation, and during the autumn foliage season. There may be long lines, especially for the boat rides around La Collina and Hachimanbori, so please allow plenty of time for your visit.
  • Manners — The townscape is a mix of residential and tourist areas. Please walk quietly and refrain from entering or taking photographs of private property or residences. Please take your trash home with you or dispose of it in designated areas.
  • Things to note when taking the boat tour - Please follow the instructions on board, such as seating, not standing up, and not reaching out. The service may be canceled depending on the weather.
  • Seasonal clothing and cold weather protection — In winter, the wind from Lake Biwa can make it feel cold. Spring mornings can be chilly, so bring a jacket. Summer is hot and humid, so don't forget to stay hydrated.
  • Barrier-free access and mobility — Some areas have cobblestone streets, slopes, and stairs, so wheelchairs and strollers will need to choose the right route. Please check the barrier-free status of ropeways and tourist facilities in advance.
  • Cash and Payment - Small shops and food stalls may only accept cash. Although more and more places are now accepting transportation IC cards and credit cards, it is still recommended that you bring some cash with you.

Omihachiman is a tranquil tourist destination where history and everyday life blend together. The atmosphere changes depending on the time of day and the season, so if possible, enjoy both a quiet stroll in the early morning and the bustling daytime.
