Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Keage Incline is the remains of the inclined railway (incline) of the old Lake Biwa Canal, located on the border between Higashiyama Ward and Sakyo Ward in Kyoto City. The facility was constructed together with the Lake Biwa Canal during the Meiji period, and featured a system in which boats were placed on carts and moved up and down on rails over sections with varying elevations. Although it is no longer in operation, the preserved remains of the railway line, with rows of cherry trees on both sides, remain, and it is a popular spot for locals and tourists to view the cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves in autumn. The stone retaining walls, remains of the rails, surrounding waterways and old facilities retain the atmosphere of the time, making it a charming strolling spot where historical scenery and nature blend in harmony.

- Cherry blossom trees and rail tracks: In spring (late March to early April), the cherry blossoms bloom and cover the tracks, making it a popular photo spot. The combination of the rails and cherry blossoms is particularly beautiful.
- Stone retaining walls and waterways: The stonework and flowing water, which reflect the civil engineering techniques of the Meiji period, create a charming atmosphere.
- Nighttime illuminations (limited seasons): The area is sometimes illuminated during cherry blossom season, allowing you to enjoy a different atmosphere than during the day (its implementation varies from year to year, so it is recommended to check in advance).
- Access to nearby historical sites: Nearby are Nanzenji Temple, Heian Shrine, the Philosopher's Path, and other sites, making it easy to combine the area as a walking route.
- Photo and walking spots: There are sidewalks on both sides of the tracks, so you can take photos and look around while walking at your own pace (please be considerate of others when it gets crowded).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: About 3-5 minutes walk from Keage Station on the Tozai Subway Line.
- From JR Kyoto Station: Take the subway (transfer at Karasuma Line/Karasuma-Oike Station to the Tozai Line) or take a city bus towards Okazaki and Nanzenji. Transfers and routes vary depending on your departure point, so be sure to check the transfer information.
- By car: Parking is limited in the surrounding tourist area. We recommend using a nearby paid parking lot or public transportation.
- Touring on foot: It is convenient to tour Nanzenji Temple, Heian Shrine, Okazaki Park, the Philosopher's Path, and other places on foot.

- Simple observation and photography: Approximately 20 to 40 minutes
- Stroll around the surrounding area including Nanzenji Temple and Heian Shrine: 1.5 to 3 hours
- If you want to take your time taking photos and walking slowly: About 1 hour (allow extra time if it gets crowded)
Nearby spots
- Nanzenji Temple (about 5-10 minutes walk): Famous for its large temple complex and Suirokaku aqueduct. Many people visit this temple along with the incline.
- Around Okazaki Park and Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art (about 10-15 minutes on foot): A cultural zone with museums, a zoo, and more.
- Heian Shrine (about 15-20 minutes walk): Large torii gate and vast shrine gardens.
- Philosopher's Path (accessible on foot): A beautiful walking path lined with cherry blossom trees in spring. Easy access to Ginkakuji Temple and Eikando Temple.
- Walking path along the canal around Keage Incline: Other sections of the Lake Biwa Canal are also walks where you can feel the history.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: It gets especially crowded during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn foliage season (mid- to late November). Visiting early in the morning or on a weekday is less crowded.
- Pedestrian etiquette: The walking path is narrow in places, so when stopping or taking photos, please be careful not to obstruct others passing behind you.
- No-entry areas: There are areas where access is restricted for preservation purposes. Please follow the fences and signs, and do not walk on the tracks or go over the stairs without permission.
- Pets: Please follow the rules and be considerate of other visitors by keeping your pet on a leash. Please take any waste home with you.
- Weather/season: The roads can be slippery when it rains or freezes. In summer, it can be hot and humid and there is little shade in some areas, so bring water and a hat.
- Nighttime safety: Some areas are poorly lit except during illumination hours, so avoid staying alone for long periods at night.
