Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Akakura Onsen is a traditional hot spring resort located in the mountains of Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture. With a history dating back to the Edo and Meiji periods as a therapeutic hot spring resort, the area is captivated by its landscapes blending seamlessly with the surrounding mountains and plateaus, and its natural beauty that changes with the seasons. The quality of the spring water varies slightly depending on the inn or bathhouse, but many are said to be effective in relieving fatigue and easing sensitivity to cold. The area is lined with modern hot spring resorts and inns with open-air baths and private baths. In winter, the area bustles as one of Japan's leading ski resorts (Akakura/Myoko Kogen area), and from spring to autumn, tourists flock here to enjoy mountain climbing, hiking, the autumn leaves, and the flowers of the plateau. The local cuisine, made with locally sourced ingredients, and the relaxing atmosphere of the hot spring town are also popular.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The resort is crowded during the winter ski season (New Year's, January to February), the autumn foliage season, and long weekends. We recommend making reservations early for accommodation, rentals, and lift tickets.
  • Onsen etiquette: Don't forget to rinse yourself off with water and soap before entering the bath. Many facilities have bathing restrictions regarding tattoos, so be sure to check beforehand.
  • Winter transportation: Roads will be covered in snow and ice. Be sure to use winter tires (studless tires) or carry chains. Be aware of delays and cancellations of public transportation.
  • Conservation of the natural environment: When hiking or climbing, please be mindful of protecting the environment by taking your trash with you and sticking to designated trails.
  • Check facility information: Opening hours and availability of day-use baths vary by inn. In particular, private baths and day-use plans may require advance reservations.

Before traveling, please check the latest traffic information and official websites of accommodations and facilities. Akakura Onsen has its own charm in each season, and is a place where you can enjoy a stay that combines hot springs and nature.
