Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kashikojima is a scenic peninsula located in Shima City, Mie Prefecture, known for the unique landscape created by the islands of the ria coastline and the indented waters of Ago Bay. Part of Ise-Shima National Park, the area has long been a thriving fishing and pearl farming destination. In modern times, it has developed into a tourist and resort destination, popular with both domestic and international tourists for its prestigious hotels, hot springs, cruises, and more. The island is also known for hosting the international conference (G7 Ise-Shima Summit) at the Shima Kanko Hotel (Kashikojima) in 2016.

Highlights

  • Panorama of Ago BayThe view from the observation point, with its intricate landscape of small islands and calm seas, is a spectacular sight. It's a particularly beautiful photo spot at sunset.
  • Ago Bay Pleasure Boat (Cruise): Tourist boats tour the bay, allowing you to get a close look at the islands and learn about the origins of the bay and the aquaculture process through commentary. Glass-bottom boats and small boat services are also available.
  • Kashikojima Hot Springs, Ryokan, and Resorts: There are many hot spring inns overlooking the bay and inns where you can enjoy seafood, making it an ideal place for a relaxing stay. There are also prestigious hotels scattered around, such as the Shima Kanko Hotel.
  • Yokoyama Observatory: A popular observation spot with a panoramic view of Ago Bay. Recommended for photos and picnics.
  • Seafood and local delicacies: Their specialty dishes are made with Ise lobster, abalone, local fish, and other seafood from Ise-Shima. They can be enjoyed with local beer and sake.
  • Guided tours and marine activities: Sea kayaking, SUP, fishing and other ocean-based experiences are offered depending on the season.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Railway: Kashikojima Station (Kintetsu Shima Line, Kashikojima is the last stop) — Kintetsu Limited Express trains run directly from Nagoya Station and Osaka Namba Station. From Kashikojima Station, you can walk or take a shuttle bus to the port or accommodations.
  • car: Take the Ise Expressway to the toll road towards Ise-Shima and follow the local signs. Parking is available at tourist spots and accommodations, but may be full during peak seasons.
  • Bus/Express Bus: Accessible by local bus or express bus from major cities (Nagoya, Osaka), Ise City, and Toba. After arriving, many people use local sightseeing boats or shuttle buses.
  • planeThe nearest airports are Chubu Centrair International Airport (Nagoya) and Kansai International Airport (Osaka). From the airport, you can take a train or bus to Kashikojima.
  • *Estimated travel time: Approximately 2 hours from Nagoya by Kintetsu Limited Express, and approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from Osaka (Namba) (depending on train type and connections). Travel time by car will vary depending on the departure point and traffic conditions.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: Half-day to full-day (Ago Bay cruise + observation deck + local meal)
  • Relaxed stay: 1-2 nights (more than 1 night is recommended if you want to enjoy the hot springs, sunset views, and the ocean atmosphere at night)
  • Activity-focused: 1 day or more (allow extra time if combining sea kayaking or fishing experiences)

Nearby spots

  • Ise Shrine (Naiku and Geku): It is a historically and religiously important spot, and many tourists visit it on day trips from Kashikojima.
  • Toba (Toba Aquarium and Mikimoto Pearl Island): Accessible by car or train. Pearl farming and marine life exhibits are highlights.
  • Shima Spain Village (Parque Espana): A theme park popular with families, it also hosts seasonal events.
  • Nemu-no-Sato: You can enjoy leisure stays in the nearby resort area, taking advantage of the forest and sea.
  • Island hopping and fishing village strolls around Ago Bay: There are many spots where you can experience the scenery of small islands and fishing ports, as well as local food culture.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Busy period: During Golden Week, summer vacation, New Year's holidays, and long weekends, the number of tourists increases, and accommodations, sightseeing boats, and parking lots become crowded. We recommend making reservations early.
  • Weather effects: Cruises and marine activities may be canceled due to weather and sea conditions. Please check the operation status before departure.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners:To protect the natural environment of the ocean and coastline, please take your trash with you and avoid fishing and aquaculture areas. When fishing or taking photos, please be considerate and do not interfere with the work of fishermen.
  • Clothes/preparation: In summer, the sun is strong and hot, so please wear a hat, sunscreen, and stay hydrated. In winter, the sea breeze is cold, so please dress warmly. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
  • traffic: There are narrow roads in some alleys and around tourist spots. If you are using a rental car, please drive carefully and check the public transportation timetable.

Kashikojima is a place where you can enjoy natural scenery, seafood, and a relaxing resort atmosphere all at once. It can be fully enjoyed on a day trip, but if you want to enjoy the tranquility of the sunsets and mornings, we recommend staying overnight.
