Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mitsukejima is a small monolithic island jutting out from the coast of Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and is also known as Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) because it resembles a battleship when viewed from afar. It is an independent reef formed by erosion caused by the waves and winds of the Pacific Ocean, and the landscape created by the rugged seascape and the silhouette of the island is one of the iconic landscapes of the Noto Peninsula.

There are several theories about the origin of the name, including one that it comes from the legend that "the first island discovered offshore = Mitsukejima" and that it has been used as a navigational landmark since ancient times. The surrounding area is equipped with walking paths and observation spaces, and is popular with photography enthusiasts as a spectacular spot for viewing the sunset and sunrise.

Highlights

  • Island silhouette: When viewed from afar, the island's battleship-like shape changes appearance depending on the season, time of day, and weather, making it a great photo spot.
  • Sunset and morning views: The island illuminated by the setting sun and the morning glow is particularly beautiful, and the gradation of colors between the sky and sea is a sight to behold.
  • Wave and rock formations: You can observe up close the marine erosion created by the sea breeze and waves. The power of stormy weather is also fascinating, but safety precautions must be taken.
  • Promenades and observation decks: The promenades and observation decks along the coast offer a variety of views of the island. Perfect for taking photos and strolling.
  • Surrounding natural scenery: You can enjoy the Noto coastline, the peninsula and fishing villages in the distance.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest major station: Kanazawa Station (direct public transportation is infrequent, so you will need to combine the following methods).
  • Car (rental car) recommended: It's convenient to get around the tourist spots on the Noto Peninsula by car. From Kanazawa, you can use the Noto Satoyama Kaido or public roads. Parking lots and observation spaces are available around the area (number of parking spaces and fees vary depending on the season, so we recommend checking in advance).
  • Bus: Local and tourist buses may operate, but they are infrequent, so it's important to check the timetable in advance. Seasonal shuttles and tourist routes may also be available.
  • Air: You can also fly into Noto Airport (Noto Satoyama Airport) and then rent a car or take a local bus from the airport.
  • Pro tip: Public transport is limited, so make sure you book your transport in advance, especially if you plan to visit early in the morning or in the evening.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (only for taking photos at the observation point and strolling around).
  • Photography and leisurely viewing: 1 to 2 hours (more time if you are aiming for the sunrise or sunset).
  • Noto Tour Plan: If you plan to include sightseeing in the surrounding area, including Mitsukejima (Rokkozaki, Wajima Morning Market, salt fields, etc.), you should plan on spending half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Cape Rokkozaki: A cape at the very tip of the Noto Peninsula. Enjoy the view of the lighthouse and rugged seashore.
  • Wajima (Wajima Morning Market): A town famous for its traditional morning market and lacquerware. It is within driving distance of Mitsukejima.
  • Salt fields and Satoumi experience in Suzu City: Experience the traditional salt making process linked to the Noto Sea and the Satoumi scenery.
  • Noto Peninsula Driving Course: Enjoy a drive around scenic coastal spots and small fishing villages.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: During peak tourist season (spring to autumn holidays, summer beach season, autumn foliage season), the surrounding parking lots and observation areas can get crowded. Tourists and photographers tend to gather in the evenings, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Safety and Clothing: The strong sea breeze can make the temperature feel lower, so be sure to pack windproof and cold-weather gear. The rocky areas and wet paths can be slippery, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Waves and tides: During low tide, high tide, and high waves, high waves can create large waves. Photographing or entering the area close to the shore is dangerous, so please follow all restricted areas and warning signs.
  • Manners: Please take your trash with you, avoid touching plants and marine life, and be considerate of the local fishing industry and residents.
  • Public transport availability: Local routes may be suspended or reduced during the winter and on weekdays. If you plan to use a bus or shuttle, please check the schedule and operating days in advance.
  • Photography equipment: If you are using a tripod to capture the sunrise or sunset, be sure to position and set it up carefully so as not to disturb other tourists.

Mitsukejima is a spot where you can experience the power and quiet beauty of the Noto Sea at the same time. When visiting, please be mindful of safety and etiquette, and take your time to enjoy the scenery.
