Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) is one of the hot spring tourist destinations that represent the "Beppu Hell Tour" in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. It gets its name from the bright red color of the pond from which steam rises, a color that is characterized by iron, iron oxide, and other mineral components. Known as a hot spring area since ancient times, it has been developed as a tourist destination, and is equipped with exhibits that teach about the geology and history of the hot springs, as well as walking paths and observation spaces for visitors.
Highlights
- Blood-red hot spring pond: The contrast between the unique color created by nature and the steam makes for a photogenic spot. The color of the pond changes subtly depending on the season, weather, and the condition of the hot spring water.
- Observation Deck and Walkway: There are viewpoints where you can safely get up close and feel the steam, heat, and air rising from the holes in the ground.
- Exhibits and explanatory panels: There are exhibits that introduce the geology, origins, and history of the hell tour, and you can learn about the mechanism of discoloration due to chemical elements.
- Souvenirs and Food: Around the Hell Tour, there are shops selling hell steamed cuisine (food steamed with hot spring steam) and souvenir shops related to hot springs, offering a unique Beppu food experience.
- Photo spot: The contrast between the red pond and the white steam changes depending on the season and time of day, and the steam looks particularly beautiful in the mornings and evenings and on cold winter mornings.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: It gets crowded during Golden Week, the summer holiday season, Obon, and weekends. You can enjoy a quieter experience by visiting the museum right after it opens early in the morning or in the evening.
- Safety and Manners: Due to the high temperature of the hot springs, please do not enter any fenced or marked off-limits areas. Throwing objects into the pond or touching it is strictly prohibited.
- Clothing and physical condition: The smell of steam and sulfur can be strong. Those who are sensitive to smells or have respiratory problems should be careful. There are also muddy areas, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
- Photography: There may be restrictions on the use of flash and tripods. Please be considerate to other tourists.
- Seasonal notes: In winter, the low outside temperature can cause steam to rise and reduce visibility. In summer, it can be muggy, so be sure to stay hydrated.
- Tickets and Prices: Most hells require an admission fee, and there are also sets of tickets (combined tickets) that allow you to visit multiple hells. It's best to check the official website in advance to find out the prices and opening hours.
Finally, Blood Pond Hell is a unique tourist spot where you can observe a natural geological phenomenon up close. While being mindful of safety, you can also enjoy it in conjunction with local hot spring culture and food experiences such as "Hell Steam."
