Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Mount Moiwa is a representative mountain in the southern part of Sapporo, Hokkaido, with an elevation of approximately 531m. Located close to central Sapporo, it offers a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the city, the Ishikari Plain, and even the Sea of Japan in the distance, making it popular for its daytime, evening, and night views. The summit is equipped with an observation deck, restaurants, and shops, and is easily accessible by tourist ropeway, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Its appeal lies in its changing seasonal scenery (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, snowy scenery), and on clear days, you can see Mount Komagatake and the sea in the distance.

Highlights
– Summit Observatory: A 360-degree panoramic view of Sapporo city. The gradation of colors before and after sunset and the night view (Sapporo city lights) are especially popular.
- Ropeway ride experience: The route from the foot of the mountain to the middle and summit is a sightseeing experience where you can enjoy the scenery (the round trip ride takes about a few minutes).
- Hiking trails: There are well-maintained hiking trails, and many people climb the mountain for the purpose of observing nature or getting some exercise. There are trails for beginners to intermediate hikers.
- Nature in all four seasons: fresh greenery in spring, shade in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery in winter. In winter, the contrast between the snow and the night view is beautiful.
– Summit facilities: Observation area, cafe/restaurant, shop, etc. There are also spots for taking commemorative photos and benches.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Public transportation: From central Sapporo, it is common to combine the subway and bus. Local buses run from major stations (Sapporo Station, Odori Station, Susukino) to the Nakajima Park area and the foot of the ropeway mountain. Detailed timetables and routes vary depending on the departure point, so please check the official website or route search before visiting.
- Ropeway Sanroku Station: There is a ropeway station (Sanroku Station) at the base of the mountain, from where you can take the ropeway to the summit. There is also a parking lot near Sanroku Station (please note that there are limited spaces available, so public transportation is recommended when it is crowded).
- Car/Taxi: Approximately 20-40 minutes from central Sapporo (depending on traffic conditions). In winter, snow and frozen roads can occur, so winter gear (studless tires, etc.) is required.
*Timetables, operation status, fares, and availability and fees of parking may change, so please check the official information in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Take the ropeway to the summit and back, then enjoy the view from the observation deck: 1.5 to 2.5 hours
– Viewing from before sunset to the night view (sunset to night view): 2 to 3 hours
– Round trip hiking (using mountain trails, for those with good walking skills): 3-6 hours (highly variable depending on route and pace)
– If you include meals and cafe visits, it is safe to plan for an additional 30 minutes to an hour.

Nearby spots
– Nakajima Park: A park perfect for strolling, with a boat pond and a Japanese garden. Sapporo Concert Hall (Kitara) is also nearby.
- Maruyama Park and Hokkaido Shrine: A spot where you can experience nature and history, and is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot in spring.
– Sapporo Maruyama Zoo: A popular attraction for families.
– Susukino and Odori Park: A sightseeing and gourmet spot in the city. It's easy to combine sightseeing with the night view of Mount Moiwa.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The ropeway station and observation deck are particularly crowded on weekends, holidays, and during tourist seasons (autumn foliage viewing, winter night view season, Golden Week, etc.). It tends to be particularly crowded in the evenings before sunset and into the night, so please allow yourself plenty of time.
- Weather: The summit is often windier and colder than the city. Be sure to bring warm clothing, especially after dusk and in winter. The ropeway may be suspended in bad weather (strong winds, heavy snow, dense fog).
– Hiking clothing and equipment: trekking shoes, drinks, snacks, rain gear, a charger for your phone, etc. In winter, you will need crampons and warm clothing.
- Nature conservation and etiquette: Please be sure to take your trash with you, do not harm plants or animals, and do not step onto the sidewalk.
- Night photography/drones: Flying drones without permission near the observation deck may be prohibited. When using a tripod or other equipment, please be considerate to other visitors.
- Check official information: Please check the official websites of Mt. Moiwa Ropeway and Sapporo City in advance for information on opening hours, fares, temporary suspensions, event information, etc.
