Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Horai Bridge is a wooden footbridge spanning the Oi River in Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture, approximately 897 meters long and 2.7 meters wide. It was built in 1879 (Meiji 12) and has been deeply involved in the local transportation and daily life ever since. Due to its unusual length, it is often introduced as the "longest wooden footbridge in the world," and is attractive for its historical value and unique scenery.

From the bridge, you can enjoy the majestic flow of the Oi River, the surrounding countryside, and its seasonal scenery (cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in early summer, autumn leaves, and morning mist in winter), making it a popular spot for photography and strolling. The texture of the wood and the continuous lines of the handrails give you a sense of old-fashioned charm just by walking along it.

Highlights

  • The scale of the long wooden bridge: The bridge stretches out in a straight line, which is a spectacular sight. Walking across the entire length is a unique experience.
  • The scenery of each season: the cherry blossom trees in spring, the greenery in summer, the autumn leaves, and the morning mist (river mist) in winter are particularly photogenic.
  • Evening and morning views: Don't miss the silhouette shrouded in morning mist and the view of the bridge bathed in the sunset.
  • Oigawa Railway's steam locomotive photo spot: There is a nearby spot where you can take photos of the steam locomotive running, which is popular with railway fans.
  • A historic structure: You can see the old-fashioned construction up close, including wooden handrails and bridge girders.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: The main access points are Shimada Station or Kanaya Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line. From Shimada Station, it is about a 10-15 minute taxi ride (depending on road conditions).
  • Bus: There are some bus stops around Horaibashi on Shimada City bus routes. Please check the timetable and operating days in advance.
  • By car: Access via the national highway from the Tomei Expressway Yoshida IC or Fujieda Okabe IC. There are paid and free parking lots scattered around the area, but the number of spaces is limited, so it is recommended to arrive early on weekends and during peak tourist seasons.
  • Bicycles: It's relatively easy to get to, and many people visit as part of the surrounding cycling routes. Pedestrians have the right of way on the bridge, so it's best to dismount your bicycle before crossing.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: If you just want to go back and forth across the bridge and take photos, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • A leisurely stroll and photography: If you want to wait for the morning mist or sunset and explore the surrounding area, it will take 1-2 hours.
  • If you combine it with sightseeing in the surrounding area: If you include photographing the Oigawa Railway and visiting nearby spots (hot springs, museums, etc.), it will take about half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Oigawa Railway (SL train): There is a section where steam locomotives run, and you can enjoy taking photos and riding on the train.
  • Shimada-juku (Old Tokaido): Take a stroll around the historic streets and historical sites.
  • Kawane Onsen and Onsenkyo area: Relax and unwind with a day trip to the hot springs or at a hot spring inn (transportation by car is convenient).
  • Tea fields (Makinoharadai area): While enjoying the typical Shizuoka tea plantation scenery, we also recommend visiting tea-related facilities.
  • Shimada City Museum and local archives: Facilities where you can learn about history and culture.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area tends to be crowded on weekends, consecutive holidays, during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, and on days when steam locomotives are in operation. Please be considerate of others when using tripods for photography or when occupying the area in large groups.
  • Bridge tolls and management: Due to bridge management, there may be periods when bridge tolls are collected or instructions from the management office may be given. Please follow the on-site signs.
  • Safety: Wooden floorboards can become slippery in wet or icy weather. Watch your step and wear rain gear and non-slip shoes.
  • Bicycles and vehicles: The bridge is for pedestrians only, so bicycles must dismount and cross. Motorized vehicles may be prohibited from crossing. Please follow the signs.
  • Natural conditions: The Oi River can become swollen and muddy, so pay close attention to river conditions and weather information. Access may be restricted after typhoons or heavy rain.
  • Manners: The bridge is long and narrow, so there will be a lot of traffic passing each other. Please be careful not to obstruct traffic when taking photos, and be sure to take any trash home with you.

Note: Access times, bridge fees, and opening and closing times are subject to change. We recommend checking the latest information from the Shimada City Tourism Association or local official sources before visiting.
