TOC

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Hiko is a sacred mountain with an elevation of approximately 1,199m, located on the border between Soeda Town, Tagawa County, Fukuoka Prefecture and Oita Prefecture. It has long flourished as a center of Shugendo (mountain worship), and many temples, shrines, and monks gathered there as a place for mountain training and worship. Even today, remains of religious structures such as Hikosan Shrine remain, as well as the stone steps and giant trees on the approach to the mountain, making it a place where you can experience Japanese mountain worship.

The mountain has a rugged appearance, with a series of main peaks including Kita-dake, Naka-dake, and Minami-dake, and its appearance changes with the seasons. The autumn foliage is particularly spectacular, attracting many tourists and climbers. Climbing routes range from walking courses for beginners to full-scale traverse routes including rocky areas and chain sections, so you can enjoy everything from hiking to full-scale mountain climbing.

Highlights

  • Hikosan Shrine (offering hall): A historic shrine located at the foot of the mountain to mid-mountain. You can enjoy worshiping and the appearance of the shrine building.
  • Stone steps and old treesThe majestic atmosphere created by the long stone steps and ancient cedar and cypress trees is a symbol of Mt. Hiko.
  • View from the summit of NakadakeOn a clear day, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains and the distant horizons.
  • Seasonal flowers and natureEach season has its own charm: azaleas and rhododendrons in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery in winter.
  • Shugendo ruins and sacred sites: The mountains are dotted with old shrines and sites used for training, making it a great place to take a historical walk.
  • Trails and rocky areasThere are a variety of hiking trails, including ridge walks and chain sections for those with good stamina.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Soeda Station on the JR Hitahikosan Line is one of the closest stations (you can get to the foot of the mountain from the station by bus or taxi).
  • public transportation: Please check the schedule in advance as the number of regular buses is limited. Special buses and shuttles may operate during the tourist season (especially during the autumn foliage season).
  • car: It takes about 1-2 hours by car from Fukuoka city or Kitakyushu city (depending on road and traffic conditions). There is a parking lot for worshippers around Hikosan Shrine at the foot of the mountain, but it gets crowded during the autumn foliage season and on weekends.
  • Taxi and transportation to the trailhead:It is convenient to take a taxi from Soeda Station to the trailhead and Hoheiden parking lot. Public transportation is limited, so if you are traveling in a group, renting a car is more practical.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Visit to Hikosan Shrine and stroll around the surrounding area: 1-2 hours
  • Day hike to the summit of Mt. Nakadake (round trip): 3-5 hours (depending on the course and stamina)
  • Hikosan traverse and full-scale mountain climbing around multiple peaks: Half a day to a full day (6 to 8 hours)
  • If you plan to take your time taking photos and observing the autumn leaves and nature, it's a good idea to allow a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Soeda Town's hot springs and day-trip bathing facilities: Convenient for bathing and resting after hiking (please check the facility's opening hours and seasons in advance).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestionParking lots and hiking trails will be particularly crowded during the autumn foliage season and long weekends. Please be prepared for traffic jams and full parking lots, so consider leaving early in the morning or using public transportation.
  • Number of public transport services: There are few buses running, so please check the timetable in advance if you plan to use one.
  • Equipment:There are trails with elevation changes, rocky areas, and steep slopes, so hiking boots, rain gear, cold weather gear, drinks, and snacks are essential. There are also sections with chains and slippery areas, so gloves and walking sticks are a good idea.
  • Winter precautions: In winter, snow and ice increase the risk of slipping and falling. Winter mountaineering gear and chains may be required. Be sure to check weather and road information.
  • Manners and consideration for a place of worshipHikosan is an ancient sacred site. Please observe basic etiquette, such as remaining quiet at shrines and temples and on the approach to the shrine, taking your trash with you, and not entering restricted areas.
  • Nature protection/safety: Do not go outside Knollner, do not damage plants or the terrain, and be careful of wild animals such as bears and vipers (check sightings and how to deal with them).
  • Information confirmationPlease note that road closures, road conditions, and opening and closing times of the shrine office may change, so please check the latest information from the Soeda Town Tourism Association or official Hikosan Shrine information before setting off.
