Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Naegi Castle Ruins is a historic mountain castle located in Naegi, Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture. Believed to have been built during the Sengoku period, it features steep cliffs and stone walls clinging to the valley, giving it the feel of a "castle towering atop a mountain." While the castle's original keep no longer exists, many remains remain, revealing the original structure, including earthworks, stone walls, tower bases, and the layout of the kuruwa. From the restored walkways and observation deck, visitors can enjoy views of the Kiso River (and the nearby valley) and mountain ranges below. The landscape, where history and nature blend together, is particularly beautiful during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season, making it a popular destination not only for castle enthusiasts but also for landscape photographers.

Highlights

  • The arrangement of stone walls and enclosures that approach the cliffs: the defensive structure that makes use of the differences in elevation that are unique to mountain castles remains well preserved.
  • Observation spot: The view from the main enclosure and the restored remains of the tower is spectacular. On a clear day, you can see the distant mountains and valleys.
  • Restored walkways and tower base: There are walkways and viewing routes designed for visitors, allowing them to safely observe the remains up close.
  • Document exhibits (if there are other facilities): There are often small museums and panel exhibits that explain the history of Naegi Castle and the castle town, allowing you to learn about the background.
  • Seasonal scenery: Cherry blossoms (spring), fresh greenery, and autumn leaves adorn the castle ruins, allowing you to enjoy different views throughout the seasons.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Watch your step: The castle ruins have slopes, stairs, and unpaved areas. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Be especially careful in rainy weather and winter as the trails can be slippery.
  • Crowds: It gets crowded during cherry blossom season, autumn foliage season, Golden Week, etc. Parking lots tend to fill up quickly, so we recommend taking public transportation or arriving early.
  • Admission fees and opening hours: Some areas may have fees and opening hours. Please check the fees and opening hours in advance.
  • Preserving the ruins and etiquette: Stone walls and earthworks are valuable historical sites. Please observe the rules, such as not entering restricted areas, not taking stones or wood, taking your trash with you, and strictly prohibiting open flames.
  • Use of drones, etc.: Please refrain from flying drones without permission out of consideration for the protection of the historic site and other visitors. If you wish to use a drone, be sure to check regulations and permissions beforehand.
  • Weather precautions: Be careful of the sun and heat in summer, and the cold and freezing in winter. Prepare drinks and warm clothing.
