Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Naena Falls is a representative waterfall in Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture, known for its spectacular scenery, with a mountain stream cascading down a cliff in one go. The water falls from a height of approximately 50-55m, and the sight of it cascading down a wide monolith is impressive, with its appearance changing with each season. The waterfall, which flows along a terrain formed by volcanic activity and erosion, is popular as a tourist and photo spot, coupled with the surrounding virgin forest and beautiful valley, and is also known for being selected as one of the "100 Best Waterfalls of Japan."

Highlights

  • Panoramic view from the observation deck: From the observation space on top of the cliff, you can get a panoramic view of the entire waterfall, making it easy to capture photos of the impressive falling water.
  • Close-up viewing along the walking trail: By walking down the trail or stairs, you can get close to the falls and feel the sound and spray of the water (watch your step).
  • Seasonal changes: When the snow melts in spring, the water volume increases and the waterfall becomes more powerful, in summer the fresh green leaves appear, in autumn the leaves turn red, and in winter the waterfall freezes over, creating a different atmosphere.
  • Photo spot: The combination of the waterfall, the surrounding trees, and the seasonal colors creates a beautiful landscape that makes for great wide-angle and long-exposure shots.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Accessible by car or bus from major stations in the Myoko area (e.g. Myoko Kogen Station). Please note that the number of public transport services varies depending on the region and season, so please check in advance.
  • By car: It takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes on a regular road from the nearest interchange on the Joshinetsu Expressway (near Myoko Kogen). There is a parking lot, and from there you can follow the footpath to the waterfall.
  • Buses and taxis: Local and tourist buses may operate during the tourist season. If you plan to use public transportation, be sure to check the timetable in advance (please note that there may be limited service).
  • Parking: There are free and paid parking lots near the viewpoint of the falls. From the parking lot to the falls, it is a short walk along a footpath that takes about 10 minutes.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term visit: If you only want to view from the observation deck, it will take about 30 minutes to an hour.
  • If you go down the trail to get closer to the waterfall, it will take about 1 to 1.5 hours round trip (allowing for plenty of time if you include taking photos and exploring the surrounding area).
  • If you combine this with exploring the surrounding area and nearby spots, it will take half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Myoko Kogen area: A tourist hub dotted with ski resorts and hot springs that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
  • Lake Nojiri: A tourist spot where you can enjoy boating, canoeing, and strolling along the lakeside (accessible by car).
  • Kurohime Plateau and Mount Kurohime area: Tourist destinations for hiking, seasonal flowers, and ranches.
  • Hot springs: We recommend soaking in a hot spring in the Myoko area (such as Akakura Onsen) after viewing the waterfall to soothe your fatigue.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Parking lots and observation decks can be crowded during peak tourist seasons, weekends, and during the autumn foliage season. Visit early in the morning or on a weekday for a more relaxed experience.
  • Footing and Clothing: There are some slippery sections and stairs on the trail. We recommend trekking shoes or non-slip shoes and comfortable clothing.
  • Weather and water level: There are dangerous areas when the water level rises due to heavy rain or melting snow. Please do not go near the area when the water level rises.
  • Winter precautions: In winter, road closures and dangerous areas may occur due to freezing and snow accumulation. Please take measures to protect yourself from the cold and slip, and check local information.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Please be sure to take your trash with you and stay away from restricted areas. Please be considerate of the plants and animals and protect the natural environment around the waterfall.
  • Use of drones, etc.: Please follow local regulations and avoid flying drones without permission as they may cause inconvenience to other visitors. If necessary, check in advance.

(Note) Public transportation schedules, parking availability, and walking trail conditions may change depending on the season and year. We recommend checking the latest information from Myoko City, the tourist information center, and local sources before visiting.
