Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kofuku-ji Temple is an ancient temple located in the heart of Nara City, on the edge of Nara Park. Founded during the Asuka and Nara periods as the family temple of the Fujiwara clan, it has continued to develop as a temple representative of Nara's Buddhist culture. Along with Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, it is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara." Highlights include the imposing temple complex, including the five-story pagoda and Chukon-do Hall (rebuilt in 2018), as well as the National Treasure Museum, which houses many Buddhist statues (especially the Ashura statue) designated as national treasures and important cultural properties. A place where deep history and iconic Nara scenery coexist, this is one of the highlights of sightseeing in Nara.
