Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yonezawa Castle (also known as Kamegajo Castle) is a castle ruins park located in the center of Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. From the Sengoku to Edo periods, it flourished as the base of the Uesugi clan (Yonezawa Domain), and is particularly known as a place associated with the famous feudal lord, Uesugi Yozan. Today, the castle ruins, with its remaining stone walls and moat, have been developed, and one corner of the castle site is home to a concentration of historical sites and cultural facilities, including Uesugi Shrine and the Yonezawa City Uesugi Museum (Denkoku no Mori).

In addition to being able to enjoy the beauty of the seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in autumn, the castle is also attractive for being able to learn about local culture and the history of the feudal domain through documents and historical exhibits related to the Uesugi family. Although the castle is not large, it is convenient as a base for sightseeing as it is close to the city and easy to see.
