Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kamado Shrine is a shrine located in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and is a mountain worship shrine deeply connected to Mount Homan, which towers behind it. It is said that the shrine has attracted local faith since ancient times, and is known for its blessings, particularly in terms of matchmaking (achieving a good match), household safety, and safe childbirth. The shrine grounds are surrounded by nature, and the scenery changes with the seasons, making it a popular power spot visited by many. In recent years, the protagonist (surname) of the popular manga of the same name has become a hot topic, and this has led to an increase in the number of fans visiting the shrine.

Highlights

  • Main hall and worship hall: A quiet space for worship. You can enjoy the calm atmosphere and traditional shrine building (please be mindful of photography etiquette).
  • Mt. Homan Trailhead: The temple grounds are the trailhead for Mt. Homan, and are popular as a base for mountain walks and hiking. You can choose from courses ranging from light to full-scale mountain climbing.
  • Matchmaking stone and votive plaques: This is a popular spot, especially among women, where you can see votive plaques praying for good relationships and offerings related to matchmaking.
  • Nature in all four seasons: Each season offers a different beauty, such as the fresh greenery of spring, plum and cherry blossoms, and autumn leaves, and there are many photo spots.
  • The surrounding approach and tranquil atmosphere: It is less crowded than Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, so it is suitable for those who want to take their time to visit the shrine.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Walking: From Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station, you can walk, take a bus, or take a taxi. If walking, the most common route is via the approach to the shrine or Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine (it takes about 20-40 minutes on foot, depending on the route and pace).
  • By JR: Accessible by bus or taxi from Futsukaichi Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line (approximately 15 minutes by car, depending on traffic conditions).
  • Car/Parking: There are parking lots in the area, but they are limited in number and may be full on weekends and during peak tourist seasons. We recommend using public transportation.
  • Access by hiking: If you are using the Mt. Homan trailhead, please plan ahead and allow plenty of time and hiking equipment. Many sections of the hiking trail are well maintained, but they can be slippery in rainy weather.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Shrine visit only: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including strolling around the grounds and purchasing amulets and votive plaques)
  • Photography and leisurely strolls: 1-2 hours
  • Short hike to Mount Homan (round trip): 2-4 hours (depending on the route)
  • If you include full-scale mountain climbing: Half a day to a full day (depending on the climbing route and your physical strength)

Nearby spots

  • Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine (walking distance) — This large shrine is famous for being the god of learning. The souvenir shops along the approach and the Umegae mochi (rice cakes) are also popular.
  • Kyushu National Museum — A large museum near Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine with a rich history and cultural exhibits.
  • Komyozenji Temple — A temple known for its gardens and tranquil grounds.
  • Mount Homan Hiking Courses - There are many courses for enjoying mountain climbing and trekking.
  • Cafes and souvenir shops around Dazaifu's approach to the temple - Convenient for resting and eating during your walk.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The Dazaifu area is a tourist destination, so it gets crowded especially on weekends and holidays, during the plum and cherry blossom season in spring, during the autumn foliage season, and during the New Year holidays. Visiting early in the morning or on a weekday will be less crowded.
  • Climbing Safety: When climbing Mt. Homan, please prepare hiking boots, warm clothing, rain gear, and food and drink. After rain, the path can become slippery and dangerous. Please do not push yourself too hard and take into consideration your physical strength and the weather.
  • Worship Manners: Observe proper etiquette in front of the worship hall (such as washing your hands, bowing twice, clapping twice, and bowing once), and remain quiet within the grounds. Photography is prohibited in some areas of the main hall and in the priests' work areas, so please follow the posted notices.
  • Parking and Transportation: Parking is limited, so we recommend using public transportation. Please drive carefully as the surrounding roads are narrow in some places.
  • Cultural assets and nature conservation: Old shrines and nature are important resources for the region. Please take your trash with you and avoid entering or collecting plants in areas other than designated areas.
  • Relationship with the anime/work: Due to the existence of a work with the same name, the number of visitors may increase, but the shrine is still a place of worship. Please be mindful of moderation in your behavior.

Combine your visit with a stroll around the area and a hike up Mount Homan to enjoy both nature and history. Adjust your stay to suit your schedule.
