Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Cape Shakotan, located in Shakotan Town, Hokkaido, is one of the most scenic spots on the Shakotan Peninsula. Its greatest attractions are its dynamic topography with cliffs jutting out into the sea and the crystal clear cobalt blue waters known as "Shakotan Blue." It has long been a fishing base, and has contributed to the safety of the local maritime area by establishing a lighthouse as a key point for maritime traffic. As a tourist destination, many people visit for the observation spots, sightseeing boats, and seafood (especially sea urchin in summer).
Highlights
- Shakotan Blue: The transparency and deep blue of the sea on a clear day. Beautiful and photogenic.
 - Cliff view: A view of the sheer rock face and the expansive seascape from the tip of the cape.
 - Cape Shakotan Lighthouse: A landmark of the cape. There are also places in the surrounding area that are popular for walking and taking photos.
 - Sunset: The beauty of the sun sinking into the horizon is not to be missed (weather permitting).
 - Seafood gourmet: Fresh sea urchin and seafood from nearby fishing ports such as Bikuni.
 - Sightseeing boats and diving: Enjoy the scenery from the sea and the Shakotan blue waters firsthand while diving (seasonal operations).
 - Wildlife and seabird watching: You can see seabirds around the cliffs and, if you're lucky, some underwater creatures.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
Public transportation is infrequent and inconvenient, especially outside of tourist season, so it is common to access the area by car.
- The nearest major stations are JR Otaru Station or JR Yoichi Station, from which you can take a car or local bus.
 - By car: Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours from Sapporo via national and prefectural roads (varies depending on traffic conditions). Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours from Otaru.
 - Bus: During the summer tourist season, tourist buses and special services may operate from the Otaru and Yoichi areas, but the number of services is limited. Please check the timetable and operating period in advance.
 - From the airport: Approximately 2.5-3 hours by car from New Chitose Airport (depending on connections and traffic conditions).
 - Parking: There are parking lots near the observation points and viewpoints, but they may fill up during peak seasons.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short-term scenic viewing: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including parking and photography).
 - Walking and visiting the observation deck: 1-2 hours (if walking leisurely around the cape).
 - Half-day to full-day course: If you use Cape Shakotan as your base and visit the surrounding areas such as Mikuni Port and Cape Kamui, it will take half to a full day. If you combine it with a seafood lunch and a sightseeing boat, we recommend the full-day plan.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: During the summer (especially June to August), Golden Week, and the Obon holiday, tourists flock to the area, and parking lots and restaurants become crowded. You can avoid the crowds by visiting early in the morning or in the evening.
 - Safety: The cliff edges can be very dangerous. Some areas are not fenced or signposted, so please avoid taking photos or entering areas too far from the barriers and keep a close eye on children.
 - Weather and sea conditions: The sea breeze is strong and often feels cold, so please bring wind and cold protection. The sea can suddenly become rough, so swimming should be done in designated areas and at your own risk. Pleasure boats may be canceled if the waves are high.
 - Winter transportation: In winter, roads can be difficult to travel on due to frozen surfaces and snow accumulation, and care must be taken as some sections are closed to traffic and facilities are closed for the winter.
 - Environment and Manners: This is a fishing area. Please be considerate of fishing-related personnel working there and when entering private property or the fishing port. Please take your trash home with you and follow local rules when sightseeing.
 - Use of drones, etc.: Drone flying may be restricted around lighthouses, observation points, and busy areas. Please check regulations and local instructions in advance.
