Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Akiyoshidai, located in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is one of Japan's leading karst plateaus. It is an undulating grassland area formed by the weathering and erosion of limestone over many years, and is dotted with unique limestone outcrops and dolines (depressed landforms). The landscape created by the vast grassland, blue sky, and white limestone ground is extremely impressive, and you can enjoy different expressions throughout the four seasons.

There are many limestone caves under the plateau, the most representative of which is Akiyoshido Cave. Akiyoshido Cave is one of the largest limestone caves in Japan, and the vast space inside the cave and the variety of stalactites are well worth seeing. It is also of great geological and academic value, and is attracting attention as a field for nature observation and geomorphology.

  • Safety measures: Even on the walking trail, there are some unstable spots. Please follow all signs and "No Entry" notices. Please observe basic safety etiquette, such as not running inside the cave and using the handrails.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: The grass and limestone surfaces are fragile. Please do not trample on the vegetation or take rocks with you. Please be sure to take any rubbish with you or dispose of it in the designated area.
  • Filming and Restrictions: Whether photography and flash photography are permitted inside the cave varies depending on the location. Please follow the instructions on the signs.
  • Seasonal caution: In winter, the wind can be cold and the temperature can feel lower, so please bring warm clothing. The plateau can get cold at night, even in summer.
