Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Rokugozaki Lighthouse stands on a cape in Suzu City, located at the northernmost tip of the Noto Peninsula. It is known for offering a panoramic view of the rugged Sea of Japan and the vast horizon, and the panoramic views and sunrise and sunset views from the lighthouse's surroundings are a major attraction. The lighthouse itself is an important facility for navigation, and combined with the cliffs and coastal eroded topography of the cape, it is a tourist destination where you can get a close-up look at the grandeur of the Sea of Japan.

Highlights

  • Lighthouse and ocean view: The lighthouse stands at the tip of the cape and the horizon stretches out in nearly 360 degrees. The distant view on a clear day is particularly spectacular.
  • Sunrise and sunset: The colors of the moment the sun rises and sets over the sea are breathtaking. The scenery changes dramatically depending on the weather and season.
  • Sea cliff and rocky landscape: A dynamic coastline made up of waves eroding cliffs and whitecaps.
  • Wild nature and sea breeze: Experience nature up close with the strong sea breeze, the smell of the salt water, and the sight of migratory birds.
  • Photo spot: Perfect for landscape photos with the lighthouse as the main focus, or panoramic shots across the cape.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Public transport is limited, so the most convenient way to get there is by car. Please refer to the following:

  • By car: Head towards Suzu City via Noto Satoyama Kaido and National Route 249. There is a parking space near the lighthouse, and you can walk from the parking lot to the lighthouse (a few minutes to 20 minutes on foot, depending on the route).
  • Public Transportation: Local buses (such as Noto Bus) operate in the area, but due to limited service, it is essential to check the timetable in advance. From the nearest major train station, you can travel by bus or taxi.
(Example) There are many cases where you can take a local bus or a tourist bus from Anamizu Station or Wajima, but the number of services is limited.
  • Sightseeing tours: These are sometimes included in tours of Suzu and the Noto Peninsula, and are a more efficient way to get around than public transportation.

*Please check the latest public transport schedules and operation status as well as winter road conditions in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (enough to get a general view of the area around the lighthouse)
  • Leisurely strolling and photography: 1-2 hours (including waiting for the sunrise/sunset and strolling around the surrounding area)
  • Combine with sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (if traveling to nearby spots)

Nearby spots

  • Mitsukejima (Gunkanjima) - A rocky island jutting out into the sea, it is a popular photo spot.
  • Shiroyone Senmaida - A representative rice terrace of Noto, with a beautiful landscape of terraced rice fields.
  • Wajima Morning Market (Wajima City) - A traditional morning market selling Noto seafood and folk crafts.
  • Noto Peninsula National Park and various coastlines (such as Sonogi Coast) - an area with many sights to see when you drive around.
  • Restaurants and hot spring facilities in Suzu City – Enjoy a relaxing stay and meals featuring seafood.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Limited public transport: Buses run very rarely, especially in winter and on weekdays, so we recommend using a car or a tour.
  • Beware of strong winds and stormy weather: The cape is prone to strong winds and rough seas on many days. Be sure to dress warmly and with ample wind and cold protection. It is dangerous to enter or take photographs near the cliffs in bad weather.
  • Footing and safety: There are some areas around the cape where the footing is poor and there are places without fences. Please be mindful of safety by not going too close to the cliffs and keeping an eye on children.
  • Garbage and Nature Conservation: To protect the natural landscape, please be sure to take your trash with you and avoid damaging plants and rocks.
  • Nighttime or early morning visits: If you plan to visit for sunrise or stargazing, be mindful of your footing and the traffic (parking lot lights and road width). There are limited accommodation options in the area, so make your accommodation arrangements early.
  • Mobile phone signals and facilities: Some areas may not have mobile phone signals, toilets, or food and drink facilities. It's a good idea to bring some drinks and a map (that can be used offline) to be safe.

For the latest tourist and transportation information, please check the official websites of the Suzu City Tourism Association and the Noto region. Please enjoy the magnificent Noto seascape while taking safety into consideration.
