Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Shiretoko Five Lakes are the collective name for five small lakes in Shari Town, Hokkaido, scattered among the lush virgin forests of the Shiretoko Peninsula. Shiretoko was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, and the Shiretoko Five Lakes are one of the most representative spots where you can experience the natural scenery up close.

Its distinctive features include the beautiful scenery of the primeval forest and the Shiretoko mountain range (especially Mt. Rausu) reflected on the lake surface, the changing nature with the seasons, and the abundant wildlife including brown bears. Another appealing feature is the well-maintained walking trails and elevated boardwalks, allowing you to enjoy a nature walk in a relatively short amount of time.

Highlights

  • Elevated boardwalk: A safe and well-maintained observation route that allows you to easily observe the primeval forest and lake. Popular with beginners and families.
  • Scenery from Lake 1 to Lake 5: Each lake has a different look, and the calm waters that reflect the mountains like a mirror make for a great photo spot.
  • View of the Shiretoko Mountain Range: On clear days, Mount Rausu and the surrounding mountains are reflected on the lake's surface, creating a magnificent view.
  • Wildlife viewing: Depending on the season, you may be able to see signs of Hokkaido deer, foxes, and brown bears (but be careful not to encounter them).
  • The four seasons: fresh greenery in spring, deep greenery with wild grapes and berries in summer, autumn leaves, snow and ice in winter - each season has its own unique charm.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: Shiretoko-Shari Station on the JR Senmo Main Line. Public transportation (routed buses and tourist buses) runs from the station to the Shiretoko Five Lakes, but the number of services varies depending on the season.
  • Local buses and sightseeing buses: In summer, there will be an increase in special buses and shuttles from Shari Town and Utoro depending on the tourist season. Please check the timetable in advance.
  • Car: The most convenient way to get there is by rental car or private car. You can get to the local parking lot from Shari town center or Utoro Onsen (travel time depends on the starting point and road conditions). Parking fees and usage methods may change depending on the season.
  • Taxi: You can take a taxi from Shari Station or Utoro, but the cost can vary depending on the distance and time.
  • Please note: Public transportation is often limited in winter and early spring, so consider driving depending on the time of year you visit.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Viewing the elevated boardwalk only: Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour (including time to take leisurely photos and read the explanatory panels).
  • Guided nature walks (Five Lakes tour/lowland trails): 1.5 to 3 hours (depending on the tour, including safety briefings and wildlife precautions).
  • A leisurely stroll and use of nearby facilities (viewing exhibits and taking a break at the Field House): Approximately 2 to 4 hours.

Nearby spots

  • Shiretoko World Heritage Center (Utoro): An exhibition facility where you can learn about the nature and origins of Shiretoko. Easily accessible by car.
  • Utoro Onsen: A hot spring resort that serves as the base for sightseeing in Shiretoko. You can soothe your fatigue by staying overnight and soaking in the hot springs.
  • Oshinkoshin Falls: A waterfall located in the Utoro area, it is an easy tourist spot to visit by car.
  • Shiretoko Pass: A driving spot where you can enjoy views of the Shiretoko mountain range if the weather is good (some sections are closed in winter).
  • Cruise/Cape Shiretoko Tour: A sightseeing boat tour of the Shiretoko Peninsula from the sea, where you can enjoy the marine life and cliff scenery (operates seasonally).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Brown bear precautions: The area around the Shiretoko Five Lakes is a brown bear habitat. When entering lowland walking trails (ground routes), there are periods and areas where a guide is required. Always follow the signs and instructions of staff, and do not enter unnecessarily.
  • Strictly follow the rules: Please observe basic etiquette, such as staying on the walking paths and elevated boardwalks, not feeding animals or littering, and not approaching wild animals.
  • Seasonal equipment: In summer, take measures to protect against insects (mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks), and wear clothes and shoes that are easy to move in. In spring and autumn, it is likely to get cold and foggy, and in winter, snow and ice can make the area slippery, so you will need to wear warm clothes and anti-slip shoes.
  • Weather and visibility: The weather in Shiretoko is changeable, and the scenery may be obscured by fog or rain. Please plan well in advance and check local information (field house or representative guides).
  • Crowds: Summer tourist season and long weekends can be busy. Parking lots and guided tours can fill up, so we recommend arriving early and booking in advance.
  • Drones/Photography: The use of drones and commercial photography may be restricted within national parks and World Heritage sites. Please check and obtain permission in advance.
  • Facilities: Local toilets and shops may be limited, so it's a good idea to prepare drinks and other necessities in advance.

When visiting, you can have a safer and more fulfilling experience if you act with the perspective of coexisting with nature. Please check the latest traffic information and entry rules in advance at the official Shari Town or Shiretoko Five Lakes website or Field House.
