Shiratori Bridge (Muroran, Hokkaido) — Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)

Hakucho Bridge is a large-scale cable-stayed bridge spanning over 1 km in length across Muroran City, Hokkaido, connecting traffic within the city across Muroran Port and the intricate coastline. It was constructed in the 1990s with the aim of improving port functions and regional transportation. Its striking white main tower and radial cables allow visitors to enjoy different views at different times of the day, from the beautiful formations of the cape and sea in the daytime, the setting sun in the evening, and the illuminated night view at night. It has also become an established tourist spot, and not only the bridge itself is popular, but also the panoramic views from the surrounding observation points.

Highlights

  • The bridge's beautiful design: the white towers and cable lines stand out against the backdrop of the sea and sky, making it perfect for photography.
  • Sunset and night view: The sunset over the bridge and the night view of the illuminated bridge are especially recommended. This spot is known as a night view spot in Muroran.
  • Observation spots: You can get a panoramic view of Muroran Port and the Pacific Ocean from the observation decks around the bridge and on the hills. The ocean's changing appearance with each season is also fascinating.
  • Walking and photography: There are walking paths and observation spaces around the bridge where you can take a leisurely stroll and take photos (please note that walking is only permitted in some areas).
  • Ships and harbor scenery: You can see the factories typical of a port town and ships coming in and out, and the contrast between the industrial and natural landscapes is unique.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Public transportation: The nearest major stations are Muroran Station or Higashimuroran Station on the JR Muroran Main Line. From the station, it is common to take a taxi or local bus to the observation point around the bridge (routes and times change depending on the season, so it is recommended to check in advance).
  • By car: It takes about 10 to 20 minutes by car from central Muroran. From Sapporo, it takes about 2 hours by highway and regular roads (depending on traffic conditions).
  • Parking: There are free and paid parking lots in the observation area and park. They can fill up, so it's best to arrive early if it's busy.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 20-30 minutes (only viewing the bridge's exterior and taking photos).
  • Relaxed viewing: 1 to 1.5 hours (walking around the observation deck, taking photos from multiple angles, snacks, etc.).
  • If you are waiting for the evening/night view: Stay for at least 2 hours (if you plan to take photos and view the view from before sunset until after sunset).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: Visitors increase in the evening and night, on weekends and holidays. As photo spots are limited, please be considerate of others when it is crowded.
  • Safety and Manners: Do not enter fenced or restricted areas, and be careful not to cause inconvenience to other pedestrians by taking photos for long periods on the road or using tripods. Watch your step at night as visibility is poor.
  • Weather and season: In winter, snow, ice, strong winds, and poor visibility are likely to occur, so it is essential to prepare for the cold. There are many days with strong sea breezes, so be sure to prepare for the wind and cold. Rain and fog may also make it difficult to see the scenery.
  • Check access: Public transportation may be less frequent at certain times. Please check the latest bus and train schedules in advance.
  • Environmental Consideration: Please take your trash home, refrain from making noise, and be considerate of the environment and surrounding residents.
