Shirahige Shrine (Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shirahige Shrine is an ancient shrine located on the northwestern shore of Lake Biwa (Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture), and its large torii gate standing in the middle of the lake creates an iconic sight. Its founding is ancient, and according to legend, it dates back to ancient times, and it is a place of worship for the protection of fishing and navigation, as well as for longevity and prolonged life. The vermilion torii gate, which appears to be floating on the lake, is a staple of photographs and postcards known as the "large torii gate in the lake," and its beautiful seasonal appearances at sunrise, sunset, and other times attract many tourists and photography enthusiasts.

Highlights

  • Large torii gate in the lake: The torii gate standing on the surface of Lake Biwa changes its appearance depending on the time of day and the season, and is particularly spectacular in the morning and evening light, sunsets, and winter snowscapes.
  • Atmosphere of the shrine and grounds: The small shrine and calm grounds. Combined with the lakeside scenery, it has an atmosphere perfect for a stroll.
  • Photo spots: Popular photos include a composition with the torii gate in the foreground and an upside-down torii gate reflected on the lake surface.
  • Seasonal scenery: Enjoy the different beauty of each season, from cherry blossoms in spring, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery in winter.
  • Local traditions and festivals: Traditional culture and beliefs can be seen at annual festivals and local events (dates vary from year to year, so it is recommended to check in advance).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Public transportation: The nearest stations are Omi-Takashima Station and Makino Station on the JR Kosei Line, and it is common to take a local bus or taxi from the station (routes change depending on the season and schedule, so please check the timetable in advance).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park is crowded with photographers and tourists during the cherry blossom season in spring, the autumn leaves in fall, and on weekends and holidays. The parking lot can fill up, so it's best to visit early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Manners: Shrines are places of worship. Please observe proper etiquette at the torii gates and worship halls (such as praying at the offering box and being modest when taking photos). Please avoid trespassing on the torii gates or on the lake, and entering restricted areas.
  • Safety: The lake shore and rocky areas can be slippery in places. Please be careful of your footing, especially in rainy weather or on frozen surfaces in winter, and always check for safety when turning your back to the subject to take photos.
  • Seasonal precautions: In winter, be aware of cold weather, snow accumulation, and frozen roads. During the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season, traffic congestion and temporary parking restrictions may be observed.
  • Check facility information: The opening hours of the gift shop and rest areas, as well as festival dates, may change from year to year, so we recommend checking the official website or the city's tourist information in advance.
