Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge (Yakushima Town, Kagoshima Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Shiratani Unsuikyo is the collective name for the valleys and primeval forests in the northern part of Yakushima, characterized by a landscape that combines lush cedar forests, mountain streams, and mossy forests. While the entire island of Yakushima is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is particularly known for the mystical scenery created by the interweaving of moss and giant trees, and is said to be one of the places that inspired the image of "Princess Mononoke." While it has been a place that has been linked to people's lives since ancient times, in recent years it has become a popular trekking spot for hikers and nature lovers.
