Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shiraito Falls is a waterfall located in Kamiide, Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and is characterized by the beautiful scenery of Mount Fuji's underground waters cascading down in thin, silk-like threads. The waterfall is said to drop about 20m and be 150m wide, with the soft water flowing in several separate streams reminiscent of "shiraito" (silk threads). It has long been a popular scenic spot, and with its source being Mount Fuji's spring water, it is one of the most representative natural landscapes in the region. The surrounding area is a tourist spot associated with the Mount Fuji World Heritage Site, and is also attractive for its different appearances in each of the four seasons.

Highlights

  • Full view of the falls: An observation space where you can see the countless thin streams of water flowing across the water. A classic photo spot.
  • Otodome Falls (Otodomenotaki): A powerful waterfall near Shiraito Falls. The standard course is to visit both falls together.
  • The water is clear and spring water: The spring water at the foot of Mt. Fuji creates a clear stream that is cool and refreshing even in summer.
  • Seasonal scenery: The scenery changes with each season, with fresh greenery and green leaves, autumn foliage, and winter icicles. Autumn and early winter are especially picturesque.
  • Early morning and evening light: Depending on the angle of the light, the water flow can sometimes shine silvery, making long exposure photography a popular option.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and weekends. The parking lot fills up quickly, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Manners: Stepping off the trails or into the water's edge is dangerous and can lead to environmental destruction. Please use the designated viewing areas and trails. When taking photographs, please be considerate to other visitors.
  • Footing: Some areas of the trail may be wet and slippery, and there may be steps. We recommend wearing sneakers or other non-slip footwear.
  • Seasonal precautions: In winter, roads and stairs may freeze. In autumn, fallen leaves can make the area slippery, and in spring, the snow melts, so be careful as the water level increases. In rainy weather, there is a risk of flooding and landslides, so please avoid approaching the area excessively.
  • Facilities: There are shops and public toilets, but their opening hours and number are limited. It is a good idea to prepare drinks and other necessities in advance.
  • Protect the natural environment: Always take your trash with you and avoid contact with plants and animals.

Shiraito Falls is a famous spot where you can enjoy the beauty of nature in a short amount of time. The delicate waterfalls created by the spring waters of Mt. Fuji are especially perfect for photography and strolls. A popular plan combines a visit to the surrounding waterfalls, shrines, and Mt. Fuji-related facilities.
