Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shirakawa Barrier is a historic site located in Shirakawa City, Fukushima Prefecture, centered around the remains of an ancient checkpoint. Established in ancient times as one of the borders connecting Oshu (Mutsu Province) and Kinai, it has been featured in waka poetry such as the Manyoshu and Kokin Wakashu, and is therefore widely known as a "barrier" in waka poetry and history. It has now been developed as a historic park, and the atmosphere of the time is conveyed through stone monuments, poetry monuments, and restored guide signs. One of its attractions is that you can enjoy both nature and history in every season, and strolls are especially beautiful during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons.
