Shirakawa Springs is a famous spring located in Minamiaso Village, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. The clear, cool groundwater that springs out after being filtered through Aso's volcanic region is highly transparent, and has long been used in the region for drinking water and agricultural use. It has also been selected as one of the Ministry of the Environment's "100 Famous Waters," making it a popular tourist destination.
The spring water spreads out gently as a pond, and there is a water basin and a drinking fountain on the shore of the pond. The good quality of the water and the scenery surrounded by greenery change with the seasons, making it a great place for photography and strolls.

- The clarity of the spring water and the clear flow of the stream: The clear water that springs from the bottom of the pond is almost colorless and transparent, and the sight of it flowing down is never boring to watch.
- Water pumps and hand washing stations: You can drink water at your own risk at the pumps provided, or fill a plastic bottle with water to take home (fees may apply).
- Walking paths and surrounding greenery: There are walking paths and benches surrounding the pond, so you can relax. The autumn leaves and the fresh greenery and flowers in spring are also beautiful.
- Local products and souvenir shops: There are often small shops selling processed products made with spring water and local specialties, and it's fun to browse around.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- By car: Approximately 40-60 minutes from Kumamoto city via national highways (depending on traffic conditions). From the Kyushu Expressway Kumamoto IC, it takes approximately 1 hour via local roads. Parking is available (limited spaces).
- Public transportation: Take a local bus (Sanko Bus, etc.) from Kumamoto Station towards Minamiaso, get off at the nearest bus stop and walk. Alternatively, take the JR line to the nearest station towards Aso (such as Aso Station), and then take a bus or taxi from there. Routes and operating conditions may change depending on the season and disaster recovery situation, so we recommend checking in advance.
- Tourist buses and rental cars: If you want to travel around the Aso area efficiently, rental cars, sightseeing buses, and sightseeing taxis are also convenient.

- Short visit: 30 minutes (viewing the spring, taking photos, drawing a little water)
- A leisurely stroll: 1 to 1.5 hours (including resting at nearby shops and benches and taking photos)
- Combined with sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (when combining with other spots in Minamiaso)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The number of visitors increases on weekends, consecutive holidays, the spring tourist season, and summer vacation, and parking lots and surrounding roads become congested. If you want to take photos, early morning or evening is a less crowded time.
- Manners: Spring water is an important resource for life and the ecosystem. Bathing in the water, washing clothes, and washing dishes are often prohibited except for drinking, so please follow the signs and instructions of the staff. Allowing pets into the water and leaving trash behind are also strictly prohibited.
- Handling of pumped water: When taking water home from the pumping area, please use a designated container and be mindful of hygiene. A pumping fee or donation may be required (subject to change depending on the operator).
- Weather and season: Aso experiences large weather changes, and sudden drops in temperature and rain can occur, so please bring warm clothing and rain gear. In winter, roads may be closed or parking may be restricted due to frozen roads and snow.
- Traffic Information: Roads and public transportation may be suspended or diverted due to natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons. Please check the latest traffic and tourist information before visiting.
