Ogijima Island (Ogicho, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Ogijima is a small island in the Seto Inland Sea that belongs to Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. Originally prospering from fishing, salt fields, and shipping, the island is known for its unique village landscape, with steep slopes, stone steps, and rows of white houses that run in a stepped pattern facing the sea. In recent years, the island has become the setting for the Setouchi Triennale (art event), attracting attention for the contemporary art pieces scattered around the island and exhibitions created through collaborations between local residents and artists. Visitors are drawn to the simplicity of the small port town, the sea and island life, the joy of wandering the narrow alleys, the view of the Seto Inland Sea from observation points, and the cats that live on the island.

Highlights
- Strolling around the alleys of the port and village: The slopes, stone steps, concrete streets, and narrow alleys that wind between private houses are full of photogenic spots.
- Artworks: There are permanent and temporary exhibitions from the Setouchi Triennale, as well as installations unique to the island. Take a map and explore the artworks.
– Ogijima Lighthouse and Observation Spot: From the lighthouse and observation point on the island's hill, you can enjoy views of Megijima and Takamatsu Port (the evening views are beautiful depending on the season).
– Port seascapes and fishing village scenery: Seaside views of calm coves, fishing boats, and the sea breeze.
- Island cats: Friendly cats are often seen, but please do not feed them (see Manners).
– Local guesthouses and cafes: You can enjoy island cuisine and Setouchi seafood at small restaurants and island inns (please check in advance as opening hours are limited).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Departure point (Takamatsu side): Access by regular ferry from Takamatsu Port (center of Takamatsu city). You can get to the center of Takamatsu on foot or by city bus from JR Takamatsu Station or Kotoden (Takamatsu Chikko Station).
- Ferry: Regular passenger ferries run between Takamatsu Port and Ogijima. The journey time varies depending on the ferry, but it is generally around 20 to 30 minutes. The number of ferry services varies depending on the day and season, so be sure to check the operating company's timetable before setting off.
– Route example: JR Takamatsu Station → Walk/bus to Takamatsu Port (or walk from Kotoden Takamatsu-Chikko Station) → Take the ferry from Takamatsu Port to Ogijima.
- Please note: Cruises may be canceled in bad weather (especially typhoons and storms). Cars are often restricted from being brought onto the islands, and access by car is generally difficult.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
– Half-day (2-4 hours): A short walk around the port and the main attractions. For example, leaving in the morning and returning around noon.
- 1 day (5-8 hours): Take your time to explore the island, appreciate the artwork, take a break at a cafe, and climb up to the observation point. If you stay overnight (at a guesthouse on the island), you can also enjoy the sunset and morning tranquility.

Nearby spots
- Megijima: A nearby island with tourist attractions such as the Onigashima legend and the Onigashima Cave (Onigashima Great Cave). Many people visit both islands on the regular ferry from Takamatsu.
- Art Islands such as Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima: These islands are the venues for the Setouchi Triennale. We recommend combining different itineraries and routes to visit these islands.
- Takamatsu City: You can also plan land-side sightseeing, such as Ritsurin Garden, Tamamo Park, and the restaurant district around Takamatsu Port.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Routes and number of sailings: The number of sailings varies depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the timetable in advance, including the return sailing, and make your plans accordingly. During events (such as the Setouchi Triennale), the ferry may be crowded and extra sailings may be operated, but there may be long waits for boarding.
- Respect the island's way of life: The island is also a place for people to live. Please be considerate of the residents' lives by not entering private property or residences without permission, and refrain from taking photos of laundry.
- Cats and wild animals: Do not touch or feed cats. This can be a health risk and can cause problems for neighbors.
- Facility restrictions: Convenience stores, ATMs, and medical facilities may be limited. Please prepare cash, water, sunscreen, rain gear, etc.
- Barrier-free: There are many slopes and stone steps, making it difficult to move around with a wheelchair or stroller. If you are not confident in your physical strength, please do not push yourself.
- Weather and season: In summer, be careful of the sun, heat, and sunburn. In winter, winds can be strong and cold, so be sure to dress warmly. Ferry cancellations are more likely during typhoon season.
- Garbage and environmental conservation: Please help protect the island's environment by taking any garbage home with you or disposing of it in designated areas.

Supplementary information (practical advice)
- Advance preparation: Before visiting, check the latest timetables from Takamatsu Port, the weather, and the status of business on the island (restaurants, exhibitions, etc.). During event periods, also check crowd information and ticket information.
- Equipment: Bring comfortable shoes, a hat, water, a phone charger, and any medications you may need.
- Accommodation: There are limited accommodations on the island, so if you plan to stay overnight, make your reservation early.
