Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tashirojima (Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture) is a small island known nationwide as "Cat Island." The population is small, and the local community has been centered around fishing for many years. Many pet and community cats live freely on the island, and cats are its greatest feature, having become the island's symbol. In recent years, the number of tourists visiting has increased, and the island is often featured in photographs and media as an island where you can interact with cats, making it popular with cat lovers and photographers.

Highlights

  • Stroll around the port and the village: You can meet many cats in the alleys of the port and the village. Many of the cats are tame, but there are also stray cats who have become independent.
  • Cat-themed monuments and houses: The island is dotted with signs and decorations on houses with cat motifs, creating an atmosphere dominated by cats.
  • Coastal scenery: The quiet fishing village scenery and views across the sea are attractive. We recommend taking photos while leisurely walking.
  • Interacting with the locals: Some residents are very welcoming to tourists, and you may be able to hear about island life and fishing.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

The main way to get to the island is by regular ferry departing from the port on the Ishinomaki side (the port facing Ishinomaki). From Sendai, take the train towards Ishinomaki, then transfer to a ferry or regular ferry at Ishinomaki Port (or Watanohata Port, etc.). The travel time and number of departures vary depending on the port, but it usually takes about 40 minutes to an hour from the port to the island.

Points to note:

  • There are few regular ferry services, and some routes may be canceled or have seasonal schedule changes, so be sure to check the timetable with the Ishinomaki City Tourism Association or the operating company in advance.
  • Flights may be canceled due to weather or sea conditions, so we recommend planning your trip with plenty of time to spare.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: You can see the main attractions in about 2 to 4 hours, focusing on cat walks and strolling around the port. However, the length of your stay will depend on the departure and arrival times of the boats.
  • Accommodation: If you want to take your time taking photos and enjoying the island atmosphere, one night will be plenty of time (advance reservations are required as accommodations and guesthouses on the island are limited).

Nearby spots

  • Ishinomaki City (Ishinomori Manga Museum, etc.): There are facilities related to manga and earthquake recovery around Ishinomaki Station.
  • Oshika Peninsula, Ajishima, and other outlying islands: There are also other islands nearby where you can enjoy nature and fishing village scenery. Please check the information for each port for transportation and routes.
  • Matsushima and Kinkasan areas (depending on access route): This can be combined with other tourist attractions in Miyagi Prefecture.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • How to interact with cats: Do not chase cats or pick them up by force. When feeding cats, follow local rules and instructions from residents, and be careful not to trespass on other people's property. Also, avoid using flash photography and loud noises.
  • Garbage/Taking it Home: There may not be many trash cans on the island, so please take your trash home with you.
  • Transportation and number of services: There are limited regular ferry services, so please plan ahead so you don't miss the return ferry. There is a high possibility that the ferry may be canceled in bad weather.
  • Seasonal precautions: Boats are likely to be canceled in winter or during bad weather, and in summer the sun is strong, so be sure to bring water and a hat. Avoid traveling during typhoon season, or check the information frequently.
  • Consideration for local life: The island is a residential area. Please respect local life by avoiding noise and disturbances at night.

Final Words: Ferry schedules, operating companies, and the latest information on the island (such as accommodation availability and tourist information) are subject to change. It's a good idea to check with the Ishinomaki City Tourism Association or local official information before visiting. Please enjoy Tashirojima's tranquil scenery and encounters with the cats, while observing good manners.
