Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Inubo Station is a small local station located on the Choshi Electric Railway (commonly known as Choshi Dentetsu) in Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture. Characterized by its location near the sea and the retro atmosphere of its station building and platform, it has long been a tourist hub for the region, serving as the gateway to the surrounding Cape Inubosaki and lighthouses. Despite its small size, it boasts the charm of a typical local railway and a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean, making it a popular spot for train fans, photography enthusiasts, and those who come to watch the sunrise.

Highlights

  • Retro station building and platform: The wooden, simple station building retains the atmosphere of the past and is a popular photo spot.
  • Views of the Pacific Ocean: You can see the ocean from around the station and near the platforms, and on clear days you can enjoy a refreshing view of the horizon.
  • Access to Inubosaki Lighthouse: Inubosaki Lighthouse, located within walking distance, is a popular observation deck. The view of the lighthouse and the surrounding rocky shore is a highlight.
  • Local gourmet food and souvenirs: There are shops in the area that sell Choshi's famous seafood and Choshi Electric Railway's famous wet rice crackers.
  • Sunrise (first sunrise) viewing spot: As it is close to the coast, it is especially popular during the winter first sunrise season.
  • Riding a local train: Although it is a short route, it is fun to travel leisurely in a charming carriage.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Inubo Station on the Choshi Electric Railway (a few stops from Choshi Station, about 10-15 minutes by train).
  • Directions by public transportation (example from the city center): From Tokyo, take the JR train to Choshi and transfer to the Choshi Electric Railway at Choshi Station. The travel time from Tokyo will depend on the transfer, but it will take approximately 2 hours.
  • By car: Accessible via the Higashi-Kanto Expressway or the national highway from the Tateyama area. There is a parking lot near Inubosaki (it tends to fill up during peak seasons).
  • Walking: Inubosaki Lighthouse can be reached on foot from Inubo Station (about 10-20 minutes, including a stroll).
  • Note: Choshi Electric Railway is a local line, so there are fewer trains. We recommend checking the timetable in advance and making plans accordingly.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Around the station only: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including taking photos and walking around the area)
  • Walking including Inubosaki Lighthouse and rocky shore: 1.5 to 3 hours
  • Day trip including hot springs, meals, and city sightseeing (Choshi fishing port, port tower, etc.): Half day to full day

Nearby spots

  • Inubosaki Lighthouse: With a great view, you can enjoy touring the lighthouse and playing on the surrounding rocky shores.
  • Choshi Fishing Port and Fish Market: An area where you can enjoy fresh seafood and seafood bowls.
  • Byobu-ga-ura: A scenic spot with a series of sheer cliffs, it is popular for drives and scenic walks (easy to access by car).
  • Sightseeing along the Choshi Electric Railway: We also recommend touring the area around Togawa, the last stop, and the small stations along the line.
  • Hot springs (day-trip hot springs/hotels around Choshi): You can relax and soothe your body after sightseeing.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Busy periods: Golden Week, summer beach season, and the New Year's holiday season (first sunrise) are particularly busy. Parking lots and restaurants tend to fill up quickly, so it's best to arrive early.
  • Weather and sea hazards: Inubosaki is prone to sea breezes and strong winds, and the waves can get high on the rocky shore. Please be careful when entering the rocky shore or taking photos on rocky areas as there is a risk of slipping or falling.
  • Number of trains: There are times when the Choshi Electric Railway has fewer trains. Please check the return time and plan a reasonable itinerary.
  • Facilities and restrooms: As this is a small station, facilities are limited. The opening hours of surrounding facilities may also be limited, so please check in advance.
  • Manners: This is a mixed tourist and residential area. Please be considerate of the locals by taking your trash with you, refraining from causing a nuisance while pedestrians, and refraining from loud conversations.
  • Prepare cash: Stores around local train lines may not accept cards or electronic money, so it's a good idea to have some cash on hand.

Inubo Station is a base from which you can enjoy the unique atmosphere of a "small seaside station" and the scenery and food culture of the Inubosaki area. Try visiting to see the changing seasonal expressions of the sea and the sunrise.
