Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Katayamazu Onsen is one of the Kaga hot spring resorts in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and is a hot spring resort that spreads out along the shores of Lake Shibayamagata. It is said to have been discovered as far back as the Edo period, and has been popular with the Kaga domain and literary figures. Its greatest attraction is the view facing the lake, which is particularly beautiful when shrouded in evening and morning mist, and you can spend a relaxing time strolling through the hot spring town.

The hot springs are equipped with inns, public baths, and day-trip facilities, and there are also footbaths and footbath cafes where you can easily take a bath. From the hot spring town, you can enjoy the Ukimido Pavilion of Lake Shibayama and the walking paths along the lakeside, so there is plenty to enjoy other than just soaking in the hot springs.

Highlights

  • Lakeside scenery of Lake Shibayama: The sunset over the lake and the cityscape reflected on its surface are popular photo spots.
  • Ukimido: A small temple built on the lake. Its appearance changes depending on the season and time of day.
  • Touring the hot springs in the hot spring town: Enjoy a casual hot spring experience at each inn's bathhouse, public bath (common bath), or foot bath.
  • Kaiseki cuisine at a hot spring inn: Enjoy local cuisine made with Kaga vegetables and seafood from the Sea of Japan.
  • Nature in all four seasons: fresh greenery in spring, waterfowl in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery in winter - each season has its own unique charm.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Busy periods: Accommodations and day-trip facilities are crowded during Golden Week, the summer holidays, Obon, and the New Year holidays. We recommend making reservations early, especially for accommodations with dinner included.
  • Bathing etiquette: When using public baths or inn bathrooms, please observe general onsen etiquette, such as pouring water over yourself and using soap in designated areas in the bathtub.
  • Regarding tattoos: Some facilities may refuse you entry to the baths. If you have any concerns, please check with the facility in advance.
  • Seasonal clothing: In winter, there is a possibility of snow accumulation and frozen roads, so dress warmly and prepare for driving. In summer, there may be days with high humidity.
  • Consideration for the natural environment: When walking around the lakeside or taking photos, please take your trash with you and be considerate of the environment and birds.
  • Check transportation options: There are times when there are fewer buses and shuttles. It's a good idea to check the last bus and operating days in advance.
