Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Atami Sun Beach is a sandy beach adjacent to the city of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture. Characterized by its arched coastline, a promenade lined with palm trees, and nighttime illuminations, the beach offers a blue sea and white sand during the day, beautiful sunsets in the evening, and romantic illuminated scenery at night. Located in the heart of the hot spring resort of Atami, it is popular with many tourists as a base for sightseeing, strolls, and photography. It is also a popular swimming spot in the summer, and serves as a venue for events such as seaside fireworks displays throughout the year.
Highlights
- Coastal Promenade: Lined with palm trees, benches, and a promenade, it's perfect for walking or jogging. Enjoy the ocean and cityscape all at once.
- Sunset: The sunset over the sea is a popular photo spot, with the curved coastline creating a beautiful silhouette.
- Night illumination: The beach and promenade are lit up at night, creating a romantic night view. It is also a popular spot for couples to take a stroll.
- Marine Fireworks Festival: Depending on the season, you can see fireworks launched from the opposite shore or off the beach, making this one of Atami's famous events (please check official information for the dates of the event).
- Swimming (summer): Enjoy swimming in the sea with good water quality. It is safe to swim during periods when there are lifeguards and facilities.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
The nearest station is JR Atami Station, which is about a 10-minute walk from the beach (this may vary depending on your luggage and walking pace).
Approximate distance by train:
- From Tokyo: Accessible by Shinkansen, conventional express trains, and local trains. The Shinkansen takes a short time, and conventional express trains (such as the Odoriko Express) are also convenient.
- From Shizuoka and Izu: Accessible by conventional train or bus.
Bus/Taxi: From Atami Station, it is about 1-2 meters by city bus or taxi. Buses and taxis are convenient if you have a lot of luggage or in bad weather.
Access by car: You can get there by taking the Tomei Expressway or the roads heading towards Izu. However, since it is in the city center, parking lots tend to get crowded, so we recommend using public transportation, especially on weekends and in the summer. There is a paid parking lot nearby.
