Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Cape Shionomisaki is the southernmost cape on Honshu, located in Kushimoto Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture. Since the construction of a lighthouse and navigational markers in the Meiji period, it has played a key role in the ocean. With cliffs offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, a monument on the cape, and the Shionomisaki Lighthouse, the area is attractive for its rich seascape and diverse marine life, which are unique to an area affected by the warm Kuroshio Current. The views of sunrise and sunset are particularly beautiful, making it one of Japan's most scenic spots, where you can feel the expanse of sea and sky.
Highlights
– Honshu Southernmost Point Monument: A commemorative photo spot. This iconic monument on the cape attracts many tourists.
– Shionomisaki Lighthouse: A historic lighthouse overlooking the majestic Pacific Ocean. The exterior and surrounding views are a must-see (note that the interior of the lighthouse is open to the public at different times).
– Observation Deck/Cape Cliff: A large panorama stretching to the horizon. On a clear day, you can see far into the distance and enjoy the dynamic seascape.
- Kuroshio Sea: Crystal clear waters, the changing tides and powerful currents. Depending on the season, you may be able to see schools of fish and seabirds moving in the current.
– Nearby walking trails: Enjoy the scenery while taking a leisurely stroll along the promenades and parks around the cape.
– Nearby marine parks and natural spots (see "Nearby Spots" below): You can enjoy underwater sightseeing and observing strange rock formations.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Train + Bus/Taxi: The nearest station is Kushimoto Station on the JR Kinokuni Line (Kisei Main Line). From Kushimoto Station, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes by car or taxi to reach Shionomisaki. There are also local buses, but please check the timetable in advance as they are infrequent.
- By car: Take National Route 42. It's about 15-20 minutes from the center of Kushimoto Town (parking available). It will take longer from Osaka or Wakayama, so plan accordingly.
- Plane: From Kansai International Airport, you can travel by a combination of train, express bus, and rental car (travel time depends on connections). If you are visiting for sightseeing, a car or rental car is convenient.
- Please note: Public transportation is limited, so it is best to make arrangements in advance (reserving a taxi or renting a car) especially if you plan to travel early in the morning (to watch the sunrise) or in the evening.

Nearby spots
– Kushimoto Underwater Park: Enjoy observing underwater life through the underwater sightseeing tower and snorkeling.
- Hashiguiiwa: A group of columnar jointed rocks lined up in the sea, making this a photogenic scenic spot. It is about a 20-minute drive from Cape Shionomisaki.
– Kushimoto Town Center: Here you can find local seafood, restaurants, and souvenir shops. You can enjoy fresh tuna and other seafood dishes.
- Excellent diving spot: Due to the influence of the Kuroshio Current, there are many fish, making it a popular base for diving (there are many dive shops).
Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The area is crowded during peak tourist seasons (Golden Week, summer vacation, consecutive holidays). Please be aware of crowded parking lots and surrounding roads, and we recommend departing and arriving early.
- Natural hazards: The cliffs and rocks of the cape are slippery, and when the waves are high, they can reach far away. Please obey fences and no-entry signs, and never venture onto the coast or rocks.
- Weather and strong winds: As the trail faces the Pacific Ocean, there are windy days. Please take measures to protect yourself from the wind and cold, and protect your hat from flying debris. In bad weather, visibility may be poor and you may not be able to enjoy the scenery.
- Protection from the sun: In summer, the sun is strong and hot, so don't forget to wear a hat, sunscreen, and stay hydrated. In winter, the sea breeze is cool, making the temperature feel lower.
- Facility and traffic restrictions: The opening hours of the lighthouse interior and facilities, as well as the operation of surrounding buses, may change depending on the season and day of the week. Please check with official information or the tourist information center before visiting.
- Manners: To protect the natural environment and the ocean, please be sure to take your trash with you and do not collect plants or animals. Please be considerate of local residents and other tourists.
Please use the above information to safely enjoy the magnificent scenery and ocean at Cape Shionomisaki. If you wish, we can also provide you with detailed information on timetables from the nearest station, parking information, and recommended restaurants in the area.
