Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Uzu no Michi (Whirlpool Path) is a promenade-style observation facility located on the Onaruto Bridge in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture. Walking along the promenade, which is approximately 450 meters long and 45 meters above sea level, set on the side of the bridge, you can get a close-up look at the large whirlpools that form in the Naruto Strait (Naruto Whirlpools). The structure allows you to look down at the sea surface through transparent round windows and, in some places, a glass floor, and its greatest attraction is being able to see the impressive movement of the whirlpools directly below.

Highlights

  • Observing whirlpools: The biggest attraction is the large whirlpools that appear when there is a large difference between high and low tide (especially around spring tides). The size and shape of the whirlpools change from moment to moment depending on the tide and wind.
  • Glass windows and glass floor: The round glass windows that allow you to look directly at the ocean surface and the glass floor in some areas offer thrilling views. They are popular photo spots.
  • Panoramic view from the bridge: You can get a panoramic view of the Naruto Strait, and enjoy the scenery of both Awaji Island and Naruto, as well as the ocean. The view is particularly spectacular on clear days.
  • Interpretive panels and exhibits: There are exhibits and explanations about the mechanism of whirlpools, the topography of the Naruto Strait, and the bridge, which will help you deepen your understanding of the observations.
  • Combined sightseeing with a nearby sightseeing boat: Combine the sightseeing boat with a tide observation boat to see the whirlpools up close from the sea, and enjoy the thrill from a different angle.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus: Take the JR Naruto Line from JR Tokushima Station and get off at Naruto Station. From Naruto Station, it is convenient to take a local bus (such as one bound for Naruto Park) and get off at "Naruto Park (Uzu no Michi Entrance)." Please note that the route and number of buses may change depending on the season, so please check the timetable in advance.
  • By car: From central Tokushima City, it takes about 30 to 40 minutes on local roads (depending on traffic). If you are using the expressway, it is close to Naruto IC, and there is a paid parking lot near Naruto Park. Please set your navigation system to "Uzu no Michi" or "Naruto Park."
  • Access Tips: There is an elevator (Eska Hill Naruto) and a walkway up to the entrance of Uzu-no-michi, making it relatively easy to get to the observation path. If you are using public transportation, we recommend checking bus schedules in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Uzumaki Path only: Approx. 30-60 minutes including sightseeing and photography.
  • If you combine it with a sightseeing boat (tide observation boat): Add the time required for the sightseeing boat (about 30 minutes to 1 hour) and allow about 2 to 3 hours in total to give you plenty of time.
  • Day trips that combine the area with nearby Naruto Park and Otsuka Museum of Art: We recommend a half-day to full-day course.

Nearby spots

  • Onaruto Bridge (also a viewing spot): Enjoy a magnificent view of the bridge itself.
  • Naruto Park: A comprehensive park area with walking paths, observation decks, souvenir shops, and more.
  • Sightseeing boats (whirlpool cruises, etc.): Sightseeing boats that allow you to see the whirlpools up close from the sea. Operation is subject to tide conditions.
  • Otsuka Museum of Art: A museum that recreates world-famous paintings on ceramic panels, this is a popular tourist spot in Naruto.
  • Naruto's local cuisine: You can also enjoy seafood and sweets made with Naruto Kintoki (sweet potatoes).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Check the tide times: The best times to see the whirlpools are around high and low tide (especially spring tides). Before visiting, check the tide tables, the Naruto City Tourism Association, and the operation information of sightseeing boats to find the best times to see them.
  • Crowds: Golden Week, summer vacation, and weekends can be busy, and you may have to wait for the observation area and elevators. Early mornings, evenings, and weekdays are generally quieter.
  • Weather and Operation Information: In the event of strong winds or stormy weather, the Uzu-no-michi and sightseeing boats may be temporarily closed or suspended. Please check the official operating information in advance.
  • Safety and Manners: It is strictly prohibited to occupy the glass windows or fences for long periods of time, or to drop or throw objects into the area. Please be careful when bringing small children or elderly people to prevent them from falling.
  • Clothing: The wind on the ocean can be strong and cold. It is best to bring wind protection in spring and autumn, and sun protection in summer.
  • Photography etiquette: Please be mindful not to block the view of other visitors, and the use of tripods may be restricted in some areas.
  • Barrier-free: Elevators and ramps are available, but movement may take time during busy periods. Please refer to the facility guide for details.

(Note) Please check the latest opening hours, fees, transportation timetables, and weather-related cancellation information in advance with the Naruto City Tourism Association or the official Uzu-no-Michi website. Please be mindful of safety and enjoy the changing scenery of the tides.
