Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Tokashiki Island (Tokashiki Village, Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture) is a remote island in the Kerama Islands known for its crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches. The island has long been centered around fishing and community life, and after World War II, it became popular as a tourist destination after being returned to the mainland. The surrounding waters are included in the Kerama Islands National Park and are protected as a habitat for coral reefs, a wide variety of tropical fish, and sea turtles.
The island's greatest attraction is undoubtedly its ocean. The emerald green sea, nearly untouched coral reefs, clear water for snorkeling and diving, and the views from the village and observation decks give a sense of laid-back island life. You can visit from the city on a day trip, but we also recommend staying overnight and enjoying the sunsets and morning tranquility.
Highlights
- Aharen Beach: Located near the center of the island, this popular beach boasts white sand and calm, shallow waters. It also has facilities suitable for families (it is managed as a swimming beach during certain seasons).
- Tokashiku Beach: This beach boasts the clearest water in Kerama. It is a spot where you have a high chance of encountering colorful fish, coral, and sea turtles while snorkeling or diving.
- Observation decks and high ground walksThere are several observation points on the island where you can get a panoramic view of the Kerama Blue sea and the village. The beautiful morning and evening views are perfect for taking photos.
- Snorkeling and divingIf the sea conditions are good, you can enjoy the rich underwater world even from the beach. There are diving shops and tours on the island, and many courses for beginners.
- Village walks and island life: Experience the laid-back island life by strolling through the village, where small shops, restaurants, and local events are still held. Another thing to enjoy is the cuisine made with local ingredients.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Railway:There is no train service on the island, and no train station nearby, so you will need to travel to Naha first.
- Ferry/High-Speed Boat from Naha:Regular ferries depart from Tomari Port (commonly known as Tomarin) in Naha City to Tokashiki Island. The journey takes approximately 35-40 minutes by high-speed boat, and approximately 60-90 minutes by ferry (large vessel). The number of flights varies depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the timetable in advance.
- From Naha Airport to Tomari Port:It takes about 15 to 30 minutes by car from Naha Airport to Tomari Port (depending on traffic conditions). You can also access the port by combining the Yui Rail and local buses, or by taxi.
- Island transportation:Although the island can be explored on foot, it is convenient to use local buses, rental motorbikes, or taxis to get to the beaches and observation decks. Rental cars are limited in number, so we recommend making a reservation in advance.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip:If you can catch a round-trip ferry from Naha, it's possible to do it as a day trip (2-4 hours of beach and snorkeling plus travel time). However, there's not much leeway when you consider the number of ferry services and the risk of cancellations due to wind and waves.
- 1-2 nights:If you want to enjoy the ocean of Tokashiki Island at your own pace, we recommend staying at least one night. One night will allow you to enjoy the ocean at sunset, at night, and the next morning. If you want to take your time diving and exploring the island, two nights or more is ideal.
Nearby spots
- Zamami Island (Zamami Village) and Aka Island (Aka Island):It is also a popular island in the Kerama Islands. If you have time, you can enjoy island hopping by ferry.
- Naha city:There are many tourist spots that are easy to stop by before or after departing from Tokashiki, such as Tomari Market, Kokusai Street, and Shuri Castle (please check the restoration status).
- The waters of Kerama Islands National Park:There are plenty of diving spots, and you can access various spots by boat dive.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion:Ferries and accommodations are expected to be crowded during summer vacation, Golden Week, and the Obon holiday period. We recommend making reservations for boats and accommodations early.
- Weather/Cancellation:If the seas are rough, the ferry may be canceled. Please check the operation information before departure and plan your itinerary with ample time. If the ferry is canceled, you may need to extend your stay in Naha.
- Sea etiquette:Please be mindful of actions that do not harm the environment, such as not touching the coral or other creatures, taking any trash home with you, and keeping a distance from sea turtles and fish. Some sunscreens can damage the coral, so we recommend using non-chemical sunscreens (be careful of the ingredients in your sunscreen).
- safety:When swimming, do not push yourself too hard and be careful of rip currents and tidal currents. When snorkeling or diving, use a reliable shop, and beginners should go with a guide.
- Equipment and items to bring:ATMs and medical facilities are limited, so it is a good idea to bring cash, essential medications, and a simple first aid kit. Mobile phone signals may be weak in some areas.
- Seasonal Notes:May to October is the swimming and marine season. In the summer, you should take precautions against UV rays and heatstroke. In the winter, the water temperature drops, so it's cold to play in the sea, so you'll need the right gear.
Finally, please check the Tokashiki Village official website, the ferry companies, and the local tourist association for the latest information on ferry operations, tourist information, and accommodations. We hope you enjoy your island trip while cherishing the Kerama blue sea.
