Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kiyosato Plateau (Kiyosato district, Hokuto city, Yamanashi prefecture) is a highland resort located at an altitude of approximately 1,200 to 1,400 meters. It was developed through the efforts of American educator Paul Rusch and others before and after the war, and developed as a summer resort and health resort. It is characterized by its spacious grasslands, magnificent views of the Yatsugatake mountain range, and a scattering of ranches and accommodation facilities rooted in the dairy farming culture.

The area is attractive for its natural scenery that changes with the seasons, with cool flower fields and farm experiences in the summer, autumn leaves in the fall, and snowy landscapes and tranquil highland scenery in the winter. There are also many gourmet and cultural attractions to enjoy, such as the soft serve ice cream at Seisen Ryoku and the art cafe at Moegi no Mura.

Highlights

  • Seisen dormitory: A facility that represents Kiyosato. It is famous for its soft serve ice cream made with locally produced milk, and also has an observation deck, a shop, and accommodation facilities. It is also known as the place associated with Paul Rusch.
  • Moegi Village: A complex of wooden shops and restaurants. There are live music venues, craft stores, and cafes, making it a great place to stroll around.
  • View of Yatsugatake and plateau walksOn a clear day, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Yatsugatake mountain range. You can also enjoy a light hike or stroll around the ranch and flower fields.
  • Photo Spots and MuseumsThere are also small art museums and photo studios (photo art) scattered around, allowing you to enjoy the fusion of art and nature.
  • Stargazing: Because it is a plateau, there is little light pollution, and you can see a beautiful starry sky at night. Depending on the weather, stargazing events may also be held.
  • Seasonal Events: Seasonal events are held, such as flower festivals from spring to summer, harvest and autumn foliage season in autumn, and snow scenery events in winter.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: JR Koumi Line "Kiyosato Station". The central tourist area can be accessed by foot or car from the station.
  • Expressway buses and local buses: Depending on the season, express buses may operate from Shinjuku and other areas. Local buses and taxis are also available between Kobuchizawa and Kiyosato (please note that seasonal schedules may apply).
  • car: From Kobuchizawa IC on the Chuo Expressway, take the national and prefectural roads for about 30 minutes to an hour (depending on the starting point and route). Parking is available at each tourist facility, but it can get crowded during peak seasons, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Travel guide: It generally takes about 2-3 hours by car from Tokyo (Shinjuku), and about 2.5-3.5 hours by public transportation (Shinjuku → via Kobuchizawa + local trains/buses).

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip model: If you focus on the main spots, it will take 4 to 6 hours. The standard course is to stroll around and eat at Seisen Ryokan and Moegi no Mura.
  • Relaxed stay: A two-day, one-night trip that includes a plateau walk, a ranch experience, and stargazing will give you a high level of satisfaction.
  • Active: If you plan to include trekking, cycling, and visiting nearby tourist spots (Nobeyama, Yatsugatake area), 2-3 days will be plenty of time.

Nearby spots

  • Yatsugatake Mountain Range (Hiking and Views)
  • Nobeyama Plateau (Radio Observatory and plateau walks)
  • Kobuchizawa area (roadside station, outlet, winery, etc.)
  • Utsukushimori (observation deck, hiking trail)
  • Nearby hot spring facilities (can be used in conjunction with accommodation)

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestionParking lots and major facilities will be crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and long weekends. To avoid crowds, please consider leaving early in the morning or visiting on weekdays.
  • Weather/Clothing:Even though the altitude is high and it is cool during the day, it gets chilly in the mornings and evenings. Regardless of the season, be sure to bring warm clothing (windbreakers, etc.). Even in summer, the UV rays are strong, so be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen.
  • Winter roadsIn winter, road conditions change due to snow and ice. There are times when chains, studless tires, and driving experience are required, so be sure to check the information.
  • Nature Conservation and MannersPlease be sure to take your trash with you and follow local rules, such as avoiding flowers, plants, farm fences, and private property. If you are bringing pets, please check the rules of each facility and be sure to keep them on a leash and clean up their waste.
  • Fluctuations in facility operations and traffic: Tourist facilities and buses operate seasonally or have temporary closures, so please check the latest information on their official websites or tourist associations in advance.

Kiyosato Highlands is a highland resort where nature and culture coexist in harmony. You can enjoy it on a day trip, but we recommend staying overnight to enjoy the starry sky at night and the refreshing morning air. When you visit, be sure to check the weather and crowd information to ensure you enjoy a comfortable and well-mannered trip.
