Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kaiwomaru Park is a park overlooking the sea in Imizu City (Shinminato district) in Toyama Prefecture, and is a tourist spot developed around the sailing ship Kaiwomaru. Kaiwomaru is a symbolic vessel that served as a training sailing ship and has trained many navigators. It is currently moored and on display and open to the public. The towering white mast against the backdrop of the blue sea and sky is an impressive sight, and the park evokes the history of marine leisure and shipping in the port town of Shinminato.

The park is equipped with walking paths, a lawn plaza, a rose garden, and an observation deck, and offers attractive views of the seasonal scenery and the Tateyama mountain range. Events such as the "Full Sail Display," in which all the sails are unfurled at once, are very popular, and the park is also known as a great photo spot.

Highlights

  • Sailing ship "Kaiwomaru": You can enjoy a tour of the interior of an actual moored sailing ship (fees may apply) and admire its exterior. The impressive ropework, masts, and bridge are highlights.
  • Full sail: An event where all the sails are unfurled. The sight of the sails fluttering makes for a great photo opportunity, and the park is bustling with visitors on the day of the event.
  • Observation deck and walking path: There is a viewing spot where you can see Shinminato Bridge across the sea and, on a clear day, the Tateyama mountain range. The evening and night views are also beautiful.
  • Rose Garden and Lawn Square: A space perfect for picnics and seasonal flowers. Popular with families.
  • Onboard exhibits and museum: Learn about the history of the Kaiwo Maru through exhibits on shipping and sailing ships, and photo panels (exhibition content changes depending on the season).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest public transportation: The nearest stations are Kaiwomaru Station on the Manyo Line (tram) or the Shinminato (Kaiwomaru Park) area stop. You can access the park from JR Takaoka Station by taking the Manyo Line (travel time depends on the line and connections).
  • Bus: There may be local buses operating from Takaoka Station and Toyama Station. Please check the timetable and route in advance.
  • By car: Approximately 30 minutes from Toyama Station, approximately 15-20 minutes from Takaoka Station (depending on traffic conditions). Parking is available in and around the park (we recommend checking whether parking is free or paid, as this may vary depending on the season).
  • Taxi: Direct taxi rides are available from Takaoka Station and Toyama Station. This is convenient for groups or those with a lot of luggage.

*Transportation methods and travel times may change depending on the season, road conditions, and timetable changes. Please check the official website or transportation company for the latest timetables and operation status.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Take a quick look at the exterior and take photos: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • If you want to thoroughly tour the ship and view the exhibits: 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes
  • If you want to explore the surrounding area (rose garden, observation deck, local market, etc.): 2-3 hours
  • If you combine full sail display, event participation, meals and sightseeing in the surrounding area, you will have plenty of time to spend half a day to a full day.

Nearby spots

  • Shinminato Bridge: A huge cable-stayed bridge near Kaiwomaru Park. The view from the bridge and the night illumination are must-sees.
  • Shinminato Kitto Market: A market where you can enjoy fresh seafood and seafood bowls. A convenient dining spot for tourists.
  • Hojozu Hachiman Shrine: Experience the local culture at this historic shrine.
  • Mirage observation spot: When the season and weather conditions are right, a mirage may be visible (the conditions for it to appear are limited, so it is recommended to check the information in advance).
  • Takaoka/Himi direction (travel by car): You can also visit Takaoka's ancient temples (such as Zuiryuji Temple) and Himi's famous seafood spots.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion:The ship will be extremely crowded on event days such as full sail, Golden Week, and summer vacation. Please allow plenty of time as parking lots may fill up and you may have to wait to enter the ship.
  • Safety/Shoes:There are many steps and narrow stairs on board, and some areas are slippery, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
  • weather:As this is a seaside cruise, there may be windy days and sudden changes in the weather. Please be sure to wear warm and windproof clothing and a hat. In the event of bad weather, events may be canceled and tours of the ship may be restricted.
  • Pets:There may be restrictions on whether pets are allowed and on which areas you can enter. Please follow the rules and signs within the park.
  • Photo and access area:There are some areas on the ship and in some facilities where photography is restricted. Please be considerate of other visitors (don't occupy aisles, limit flash photography, etc.).
  • Garbage Manners:The park is a public space. Please take your trash home or dispose of it in designated areas. Please follow the rules regarding noise, barbecues, and other activities.

Kaiwomaru Park is a great spot for sightseeing photos, strolling with the family or on a date, and learning about the sea and ships. It's a good idea to check the official website or local guide for the latest information (opening hours, availability of tours on board, event dates, parking information) before visiting.
