Kaizu Osaki (Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kaizu Osaki is a long, narrow cape on the north side of Lake Biwa in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, and is a scenic spot characterized by a row of cherry blossom trees that stretches for about 4km. Approximately 800 cherry trees (the number varies from year to year), mainly Somei Yoshino, are planted along the cape, and in the spring, the area is known as the "cherry blossom tunnel," attracting many visitors to view the blossoms. Historically, it has long been a beloved part of the Lake Biwa landscape and has been loved by local people. When viewed from the lake, the ribbon of cherry blossoms is reflected on the water's surface, and a major attraction is that it can be enjoyed both by walking on land and by boat.

Highlights

  • Strolling along the cherry blossom trees: Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the tunnel of cherry blossoms that stretches along the cape. There are plenty of photo spots, making it the perfect spot to take beautiful photos of the lake and cherry blossoms.
  • Cherry blossom viewing from the lake: Viewing the cherry blossoms of Kaizu-Osaki from a low vantage point on a sightseeing boat or small boat offers a different kind of impact. Please check the weather and operation status in advance.
  • Viewpoint: You can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Lake Biwa and the cherry blossoms from near the tip of the cape or from a slightly higher point within the park.
  • Light-up (seasonal): During the peak viewing period in spring, illuminations and night-time events are held in some years. Event information changes every year, so please check in advance.
  • Autumn scenery: Not only can you enjoy the cherry blossoms, but you can also enjoy the autumn leaves along the lakeside in autumn (although the best time to see them is not as large as the cherry blossoms, the tranquil scenery is still appealing).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The peak viewing season (usually from the end of March to early April) can be very busy. We recommend visiting early in the morning or using public transportation. If you are coming by car, be aware of traffic jams and a lack of parking spaces.
  • Garbage and Manners: Please be sure to take any trash you leave with you, and only eat, drink, and rest in designated areas. Climbing the cherry trees or breaking their branches is strictly prohibited.
  • Nighttime safety: Even if the area is lit up, it may still be dark. Please bring a flashlight and warm clothing.
  • Boating: If you are using a sightseeing boat or renting a boat, please follow the instructions of the operating company and be aware that services may be suspended due to weather or lake conditions.
  • Drones, etc.: Drone flying may be restricted due to safety, privacy, and environmental protection considerations. Please check in advance as permission may be required.
  • Weather precautions: The lakeside can be windy and cold. Even in early spring, it's a good idea to bring warm clothing and rain gear.

Before visiting, it's a good idea to check the official websites of Takashima City and the tourist association, as well as the latest information on transportation. Kaizu-Osaki is a beautiful place that changes its appearance with each season, so be sure to plan your time accordingly and enjoy it.
