Jodogahama Beach (Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Jodogahama is a scenic coastal spot in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture, characterized by a beautiful landscape of smooth white reefs, pine forests, and crystal clear cobalt blue sea. The name comes from the fact that it was praised as being "as beautiful as the Pure Land (Paradise)," and it has long been known as a scenic spot. The surrounding area is part of Sanriku Fukko National Park, and is also an area that protects national scenic spots and natural landscapes. The contrast between the strange rock formations, coves, green pine trees, white rock faces, and blue sea makes for photogenic scenery, so you can enjoy the ocean view up close on a stroll or boat cruise, as well as sightseeing.

Highlights

  • A coastline lined with white rocks and pine trees: The scenery of whitish rocks polished by wind and rain, green pine trees, and the blue sea is the symbol of Jodogahama.
  • Jodogahama Pleasure Boat (Pleasure Boat Cruise): You can get a close-up look at the cliffs and strangely shaped rocks from the sea. The trip takes about 30 to 40 minutes (operating period and time vary depending on the season).
  • Promenades and observation points: You can enjoy magnificent views from the promenades and observation points along the sea. There are also many photo spots.
  • Jodogahama Visitor Center and Rest House: A convenient place to get local information, take a break, and get a snack.
  • Coastal rock activities (in permitted areas): Enjoy observing tide pools and rocky shore life (safe and designated areas only).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Yamada Line/JR Sanriku Railway Miyako Station or the surrounding bus stop.
  • Train + Bus: Approximately 15-25 minutes by bus (such as bound for Jodogahama) from Miyako Station. Please check the timetable in advance as the number of buses varies depending on the season.
  • Taxi: Approximately 15 minutes by taxi from Miyako Station (depending on traffic conditions).
  • By car: Use the Sanriku Coastal Expressway or the national highway. There is a parking lot at Jodogahama, but it may be full during the tourist season.
  • Access Notes: From major cities (e.g. Morioka, Sendai), you can combine JR and express buses via Morioka or Sendai. Travel time and transfers vary depending on the departure point, so we recommend searching for a route in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (if you just want to enjoy the view from the observation deck)
  • Walking around and taking photos: 1-2 hours
  • If using a sightseeing boat: Add 30-40 minutes (including waiting for the boat to operate, a total of 2-3 hours is expected)
  • If you include sightseeing in the surrounding area (eating and drinking in Miyako City, visiting markets, etc.), we recommend a half-day to full day.

Nearby spots

  • Jodogahama Visitor Center and Rest House: Convenient for getting information about the area, taking a break, and purchasing souvenirs.
  • Miyako Fishing Port and Miyako Fish and Vegetable Market: Enjoy fresh seafood and local delicacies (recommended for lunch).
  • Jodogahama Park and Coastal Promenade: An area where you can enjoy further strolling.

  • Tourist facilities and hot springs in the city: You can soothe your fatigue at day-use bathing facilities and accommodations.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: During Golden Week, summer vacation, and autumn foliage season, the number of tourists increases, and parking lots may fill up and surrounding roads may become congested. If possible, consider visiting early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Safety, Stairs, Slippery: Rocky areas and footpaths can be slippery and dangerous in rainy weather or high waves. Stay on designated paths and viewing areas, and be careful of wet rocks.
  • Swimming and rocky shore activities: Swimming may be prohibited depending on the sea conditions. Please follow the tide and wave conditions and be sure to check safety instructions and signs.
  • Nature conservation and etiquette: Do not damage rocks or plants, follow the rules when collecting shells, and always take any trash home or to designated areas. There may be restrictions on using drones, so please check in advance.
  • Seasonal clothing: The sea breeze can be strong, making the temperature feel lower. In spring and autumn, wear windproof and cold-weather gear, and in summer, wear sunscreen. In winter, there is a possibility of snow accumulation and frozen roads, so be careful when traveling by public transport.
  • Earthquake and Tsunami History: The Sanriku coast was affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. It is a good idea to check the evacuation routes and the location of tsunami evacuation towers.

*Please be sure to check the latest traffic information, sightseeing boat operation status, facility opening hours, etc. in the Miyako City Tourist Information or official information from the Jodogahama Visitor Center before visiting.
