Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tsu Castle is a castle ruin located in the center of Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, and is now maintained as Tsu Castle Ruins Park. The castle was developed from the Sengoku period to the Edo period, and is particularly known for being ruled by the Todo clan (including Todo Takatora), and the outer and inner moats, stone walls, and the structure of the baileys are well preserved. The main keep no longer exists, and many of the Edo period buildings were demolished in the Meiji period, but the stone walls, moats, gate remains, and turret remains allow visitors to feel the scale and structure of the castle in its heyday, which is part of its charm.

Located in the city center, it's easily accessible, and a major attraction is that it becomes a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in spring, bustling with visitors. As a castle ruins park, it has well-maintained walking paths and information boards, making it an easy place to visit for historical walks, photography, or as part of a trip to nearby tourist attractions.

Highlights

  • Stone walls and moats: Remains of large-scale stone walls and inner and outer moats that evoke the past. You can see the stonework and moat structure up close.
  • Enclosures and Views: From a hill near the site of the main keep, there is a spot where you can overlook the city, allowing you to enjoy both the historical atmosphere and the view.
  • Cherry Blossoms (Spring): The castle ruins park has many cherry trees, making it especially recommended during the spring cherry blossom season. There are also plenty of photo opportunities.
  • Information boards, monuments, and walking trails: You can explore the area while checking the information boards on site for explanations of Tsu Castle's history and remains. History buffs will enjoy reading the explanations as they walk around.
  • Exploring the surrounding area: Around the castle ruins, you can also stroll around and find temples, shrines, and streets that retain the atmosphere of the old castle town.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • By train: Accessible on foot from JR and Kintetsu's "Tsu Station". The walking time from the station is approximately 10-15 minutes (may vary depending on the route).
  • Buses: City buses and community buses operate, and there are routes that will get you close to the area from Tsu Station and the city center. Please check the operating times and bus stop names in advance.
  • By car: There are paid parking lots and municipal parking lots in the surrounding area, but spaces may be limited. During peak seasons, these lots tend to fill up quickly, so we recommend using public transportation.

  • Crowds: It gets extremely crowded during cherry blossom season (spring) and long holidays. If you're planning to take photos or have a picnic, be sure to allow plenty of time.

  • Footwear: Please wear comfortable shoes as there are many stone steps, cobblestone paths, and slopes. Some areas may become slippery when it rains.
  • Pets and Drones: There may be restrictions on bringing pets or flying drones. Please check the rules in advance and be considerate of those around you.
  • Facilities and Amenities: While there are restaurants and restrooms in the surrounding area, facilities within the castle ruins may be limited, so it is recommended to prepare in advance if you plan to stay for an extended period.

Before your visit, please check the latest information on opening hours, events, and access on the Tsu City tourism website or through local guides.
