Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Lake Ikeda is a caldera lake located in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and is one of the deepest and largest lakes in Kyushu. It is said to have been formed by volcanic activity, and the scenery created by the surrounding mountains and the calm water surface is attractive throughout the year. The maximum depth is said to be about 233m, and the deep blue lake surface has a unique atmosphere.

The lake is also home to the legend of a lake monster called "Issie," which has become a popular tourist attraction. The lakeside is equipped with observation points, monuments, souvenir shops, and other facilities, making it a tourist destination that combines natural scenery with local folklore.

  • Lakeside observation point: Enjoy the morning mist and evening scenery from the observation deck and promenade, which offer a panoramic view of the entire lake. The early morning mist and backlight at dusk are particularly photogenic.
  • Issie Statue and Legend Tour: This spot is fun for everyone, from children to adults, and features a statue, panels, and explanatory displays based on the lake monster Issie.
  • Nature observation and bird watching: The surrounding area is suitable for observing wild birds and plants, and you can enjoy spotting seasonal creatures.
  • Fishing spots (check permits and rules): Fishing may be possible in areas where local fishing is permitted. Be aware of the rules and closed fishing periods.
  • Combine sightseeing with the surrounding scenic spots: There are many tourist spots nearby, such as Mt. Kaimondake and Ibusuki Onsen, making it suitable for a half-day to full-day tour.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Accessible from JR Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line's Ibusuki Station or Nigatsuda Station. Ibusuki Station is more convenient as a base for sightseeing.
  • Train + bus/taxi: From Ibusuki Station, take a local bus or taxi for approximately 20-30 minutes (number of buses and travel time may vary depending on the time of day).
  • By car: Approximately 60-90 minutes from central Kagoshima via National Route 226, and approximately 20 minutes from downtown Ibusuki. Parking is available near the lakeside tourist facilities and observation decks (limited space).
  • Tourist buses: During the tourist season, sightseeing buses and tours may visit the area. Please check the operation and meeting points in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short tour: 30 minutes to 1 hour (viewing the view and visiting the Issy statue)
  • Leisurely sightseeing: 1-2 hours (including strolling, photography, and nature observation)
  • Day trip including sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (when combining with Ibusuki Onsen and Mt. Kaimon)

Nearby spots

  • Ibusuki Onsen (Sand Bath Hot Springs) - Ibusuki's signature hot spring experience. Located about 20 minutes by car from Lake Ikeda.
  • Kaimondake — A beautiful conical mountain, a popular spot for hiking and driving around the area.
  • Chiringashima — An island you can walk across at low tide (check the tide tables).
  • Nagasakihana, a scenic spot at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula - Enjoy coastal scenery and famous flower spots.
  • Local roadside stations and product shops - Convenient for purchasing local specialties (such as satsumaage, brown sugar, and sweet potato shochu).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Swimming Not Recommended: The lake is deep and is generally not recommended for swimming. Please exercise caution when near the water for safety reasons.
  • Check in advance whether sightseeing boats are available and their operating status: Sightseeing boats and experience boats may be suspended depending on the season and weather. Please check on-site or at the tourist information center.
  • Parking and Transportation: Parking lots can get crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons. Avoid parking on the street as it is bad manners and dangerous.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Please take care of the local natural environment by taking your trash with you and not collecting plants or animals unnecessarily.
  • Seasonal precautions: In winter, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings and fog is likely to occur, so be careful of visibility and road conditions. In summer, take measures against the sun and insects.
  • Public transportation may be limited. Please check return times in advance and plan your trip with plenty of time.

Lake Ikeda is a spot where you can experience the natural scenery and local culture. Enjoy the morning and evening light and the calm waters, and combine your visit with sightseeing in the surrounding hot springs and mountains for a fulfilling trip.
