Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Ikegami Honmonji Temple is a large Nichiren sect temple located in Ota Ward, Tokyo, and has long been a place of worship as a sacred place where the remains of Saint Nichiren are enshrined. It is said to be the place where Nichiren spent his final years and passed away at the end of the Kamakura period, and many temple buildings have been constructed since then. The temple is characterized by its spacious grounds, stone steps and approach road, five-story pagoda, main hall and other buildings, as well as the surrounding cemetery and stone monuments, making it a place where you can feel the calm religious scenery and rich history in the middle of the city.

Highlights

  • Main Hall (Daido) - The central temple building where the principal image associated with Saint Nichiren is enshrined. It has a solemn atmosphere and serves as the base for worship.
  • The five-story pagoda is the symbol of the temple grounds and is a popular photo spot (beautiful with the seasonal scenery).
  • Nakamise (Sando) - The approach to the shrine, which runs from Ikegami Station, is lined with Japanese sweet shops, souvenir shops, and restaurants, making it a fun place to stroll. There are also shops selling the shrine's famous Kusamochi (kusamochi rice cakes).
  • Cemeteries and Tombs — Dotted with the graves of historical figures and old tombstones, you can feel the history as you stroll around (or be quiet in the cemetery).
  • Seasonal highlights - The cherry blossoms and plum blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves in autumn further enhance the charm of the temple grounds.
  • Oeshiki - A memorial service for Saint Nichiren (the anniversary of his death) held in October. The procession of lanterns and the memorial service are very lively and have a unique atmosphere.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train: The most convenient route is a 3-5 minute walk from Ikegami Station on the Tokyu Ikegami Line. The easiest route to get to Honmonji Temple is along the approach to the temple from Ikegami Station.
  • Bus: Toei buses and Tokyu buses from Kamata and Omori stop at stops such as "Honmonji-mae." You can also access the area by bus from Kamata Station.
  • By car: There may be paid parking lots near the temple grounds, but they tend to get crowded during events and on weekends, so we recommend using public transportation.
  • From the airport: From Haneda Airport, the most common route is to take the Keikyu/Tokyu line towards Kamata or Ikegami and get off at Ikegami Station.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Visit only: 30 minutes to 1 hour (visit the main hall and take a short walk)
  • A leisurely stroll: 1-2 hours (visiting the five-story pagoda, cemeteries, historical sites, shops along the approach, etc.)
  • Participating in events (such as escort ceremonies): Half day to full day (varies greatly depending on the date, time, and event content)

Nearby spots

  • Ikegami's Sando Shopping Arcade (a strolling area lined with Japanese sweets and restaurants) - Enjoy the famous Kusamochi (grass mochi) and other treats.
  • Surrounding parks and green spaces — Outside of the temple grounds, there are many parks in the area that are perfect for walking.
  • Kamata Station Area (Shopping and Dining) — Kamata, just a few stations from Ikegami, is full of restaurants and commercial facilities.
  • Local museums and cultural facilities — You can learn about local history at Ota Ward's local materials and exhibition facilities (within walking or bus distance).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The Oeshiki (October) is very crowded. The approach and grounds are crowded due to the night-time lantern procession and food stalls, so if you want a quieter visit, we recommend visiting on a weekday morning. The New Year's visit is also crowded.
  • Manners: The temple grounds are religious facilities. Please refrain from talking loudly, driving, or leaving trash behind. Please also observe basic etiquette, such as removing your hat when praying and complying with regulations regarding photography within the temple grounds. Please be especially quiet in the cemetery.
  • Photography: Photography is permitted in most areas, but photography may be prohibited inside the temple or during memorial services. Please follow the signs and instructions of staff.
  • Footing/Stairs: There are many stone steps and slopes within the temple grounds, which can become slippery in rainy weather. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and not pushing yourself too hard if you have concerns about your legs or back.
  • Seasonal notes: The plum, cherry blossom, and autumn foliage seasons are great viewing spots, but the area will be crowded with tourists and locals during their peak seasons. Be sure to take precautions against the heat in summer and the cold in winter.
