Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Suishohama is a beach in Mihama Town, Fukui Prefecture, characterized by its sparkling white sand and crystal clear waters. The beach's name comes from the crystal-like sparkle that mixes with the sand, and on sunny days the color of the sea changes from emerald green to deep blue, reflecting the light for a beautiful sight. Located as part of Wakasa Bay Quasi-National Park, the beach's natural scenery is well-preserved, making it popular not only for swimming in the summer, but also for strolling along the beach in spring and autumn and enjoying the sunset.

Highlights

  • Highly transparent seawater and white sand: The water is shallow and the waves are relatively calm. The fine, shiny sand makes the entire beach look sparkling.
  • Sunsets and sunrises: The sunsets sinking into the horizon are beautiful and are a popular photo spot.
  • Swimming and marine activities: In the summer, in addition to swimming, many people enjoy snorkeling and SUP (equipment rental is available in some areas).
  • Walking around the surrounding nature: We also recommend strolling along the seaside promenade and the nearby small capes and rocky shores.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Public transportation: The nearest station is the JR Obama Line station (a station within Mihama town). However, there are not many bus services, so it is more convenient to take a taxi from the station. Be sure to check the route and timetable in advance.
  • By car (recommended): Accessible via expressways and public roads from Fukui City, Tsuruga City, Kyoto, and Osaka. It gets crowded with beachgoers in the summer, so we recommend leaving early. There is a parking lot near the beach, and paid or temporary parking lots are often set up in the summer.
  • Parking: Parking spaces may be limited during the summer, so please follow the instructions of the staff. If the parking lot is full, you may need to use a nearby temporary parking lot.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short walks and photography: 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Swimming and marine activities: Half a day to a full day (3 to 8 hours)
  • Day trip plan including sightseeing in the surrounding area: 1 day (when touring nearby spots)

Nearby spots

  • Scenic spots in Wakasa Bay: There are many spots suitable for driving and walking, such as the coastline along Wakasa Bay, small capes and rocky shores.
  • Mikata Five Lakes (accessible by car): A tourist spot where you can enjoy the natural scenery and lake views.
  • Local seafood direct sales stores and restaurants: There are many restaurants where you can enjoy dishes and set meals made with fresh seafood.
  • Nearby hot spring facilities: There are also areas where you can use day spas where you can bathe and relax after playing in the sea.

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The summer holidays (especially July and August) are extremely busy. Please be aware of parking, waiting for toilets, and securing space on the beach, and we recommend arriving early.
  • Manners: Please be considerate of local residents and other visitors by always taking your trash with you, following the designated areas and rules when having a barbecue, etc., and refraining from loud music and other nuisances.
  • Safety measures: Sea conditions change daily. If swimming is prohibited or a high wave warning is issued, do not push yourself. If you are traveling with children, keep an eye on them and consider wearing life jackets.
  • Seasonal notes: In spring and autumn, the wind can be strong and the waves can be high, so please dress appropriately and take measures to protect yourself from the wind. In winter, the sea can be rough, so it is safest to limit sightseeing to simply enjoying the scenery.
  • Transportation: Public transportation is limited, so it's a good idea to check timetables and arrange taxis in advance.

*Facility information, transportation access, parking availability and fees, and beach opening hours (monitoring and rescue system) may change depending on the year. Please check the Mihama Town Tourism Association or official website for the latest information before visiting.
