Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Motsuji Temple is an ancient temple in Hiraizumi Town, Nishiiwai District, Iwate Prefecture, and is an important temple site that conveys the religious culture of the time when the Oshu Fujiwara clan flourished during the Heian period. It is particularly famous for its Pure Land garden with a strolling pond, now known as the "Motsuji Garden," and features a vast pond and islands, as well as streams and artificial hills, allowing visitors to enjoy a landscape that embodies the world of Pure Land (Gokuraku Jodo).
As part of Hiraizumi's historical landscape, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, "Hiraizumi - Architecture, Gardens and Archaeological Sites Representing the Buddhist Pure Land," in 2011. The main temple buildings were burned down in the Oshu War in 1189, but the gardens have survived to the present day thanks to the remains and maintenance that preserve their original layout, allowing visitors to experience the Pure Land view of Heian Buddhism and the landscaping techniques of the time.
