Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse is a cultural complex that utilizes a historic building that dates back to the opening of Yokohama Port. It features a stately brick exterior and, together with the large outdoor plaza facing the sea, is a popular photo spot. Formerly used as a warehouse for storing cargo and as a customs-related facility, it was renovated and refurbished as a commercial and cultural facility in the 2000s while retaining its historic character. Since then, it has been used in a modern way as shops, restaurants, exhibition and event spaces.

Highlights

  • The building's exterior and historical atmosphere: The brick exterior, interior arches, and large warehouse-like space are perfect for strolling around and taking photos.
  • Event Square: Seasonal markets (Christmas markets, Oktoberfest, etc.), music and food events are frequently held here.
  • Shops & Dining: Enjoy shopping and dining at the Yokohama/ocean-themed souvenir shops, select shops, cafes and restaurants.
  • Exhibition space/hall: There is an indoor space that can be used for various purposes, such as special exhibitions, art exhibitions, live music festivals, etc., and there are also plenty of cultural events.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park is extremely crowded on weekends, national holidays, the spring holidays, summer events, Christmas, and the New Year period. Please allow plenty of time for your visit as entry restrictions and long waiting lines may occur during events.
  • Outdoor weather: The square is by the sea, so it can be windy on some days. It's best to prepare for the temperature changes and wind for a comfortable experience. Outdoor events may be canceled or scaled down in the event of rain.
  • Photography: Photography is permitted on the exterior and in the outdoor plaza, but there may be restrictions on photography in indoor shops and exhibits. Please follow the photography rules for exhibits and events.
  • Barrier-free access: The facility is generally barrier-free, but there are cobblestone streets and steps in some areas, so if you are using a wheelchair or stroller, it is best to check the route carefully.
  • Pets: In most cases, pets are allowed outdoors, but indoor stores have restrictions on entry and rules of etiquette. Please check the rules of each store in advance.
